hard drive gone in ubuntu server?

Hi i am running a ubuntu server version 12 at home and notice frequent lockups and freezes with the server.

i did a couple of reboots due to have this issue complaining about an i/o error and was wondering if it is the hard drive that's gone or maybe loose wire or issues with my seasonic PSU?

Any suggestions? Could it just be the OS acting funny?

It might be worth trying to boot from a live distro and seeing whether it allows you to open the drive OK.

Bad drive. Connect it to a different system and read the SMART data.
