Hi as a recent switcher i am still learning OSX so forgive me i this is a simple question.

i have partitioned a hard drive in to three and some of these i don't want to show on the desktop as one is a scratch disc for photo shop and the other is for downloads so is it possible to remove them from the desktop but still access them if needed from finder ?

I'm sure there is a better way, but you could right click on the drives you want to keep and choose "Make Alias" - then in Finder preferences untick the hard disks from the "show on desktop" section :)

if there is a better way, i'd be interested to hear it :)

There is a better way, Finder shares a lot in common with Unix, and so adding a period to the front of the file/drive name will make it invisable, however osx will prevent you from doing this. To get around this, use a program called InVisibles and make hidden files in Finder visable, doing this allows you to add a "." to the file name and then you can simply use the program to make all hidden files invisable again and your all done :)

If you press (Cmd+J / Cmd+, ) on the desktop you can turn off hard drives from being shown. These won't affect the drives that appear in the Finder windows, but they will no long show on the desktop.

Apologies for not being concise. I do not have a Mac to varify the shortcut keys.

This is how I'm doing it.

I'm not keen on those arrows though, must find a way to get rid of them.
