Hi all

Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be, basically this seems to be very random, you will hear a clicking sound ( only way I can describe it ) followed by hard drive activity, hourglass pops up for a few seconds then carries on as normal.

The frequency seems to be getting higher per week/month.

Hard drive going to die on me you think ?

Thanks

Have you tried the manufacturers drive check tools? Certainly doesn't sound good if frequency of these "hangs" is increasing.

If it's making a clicking sound and performing oddly then it certainly sounds like there could be a problem with the drive, the first thing I would do is make sure you get a back up of anything you can't afford to lose.

Then as kae2 suggested try a manufacturers tool and test the drives performance.

Try to avoid turning the PC on and off too many times, a lot of the time that can be enough to push a dying drive over the edge.

in 99% of cases clicking & lock ups means HDD is in trouble. That said I had one that clicked for at least a year before finally dying. Id suggest a backup ASAP though.

Most manufacturers have a boot disc image that will let you run a full diagnostic on the drive to check for bad sectors. Last time I checked UBCD (ultimate boot CD) and Hirens Boot CD had a lot of the manufacturers tools already on the image.

I would pre-emptively buy a new HDD now as theres no way to tell when its going to go for good.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts, making a back up now and checking out some tools to test it.

Not that it matters much as I'm getting all new kit on Thursday to build, but was still curious incase it was a psu problem or something as I want to sell my old kit.
