Just got my new computer and installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit, and ive installed all my programs and drivers etc. But it seems that very frequently my hdd is loading, and apart from annoying the hell out of me i dont know why its doing it?

Does vista sort out stuff in the background when newly installed (sorry for noob style question just ive never used vista before)

Not having this issue myself and I have two running on the same OS, only got the system yesterday. Might be worth looking into it as it certainly doesn't seem normal. Have you enabled anything in Vista that would cause it to do this? And new applications that do anything to the HDD regularly?

Ive got a feeling it might be that search indexing tool that comes with vista as it seems to be high in the list in my resource manager. Is that characteristic of a new build, the computer will index everything for ease of searching.

I have the search indexer too and haven't noticed an issue with it. Have you tried searching around? E.G. "<HDD Model> is loading too often"?

That reminds me, what HDD are you using?

It's the search indexer most of the time. Also after a start up it'll pre-load all your commonly used programs (superfetch) to allow them to load faster when you want to use them.

Ahhhh i see! That would make sense so will this die down over the next few days then?

I have a Samsung Spinpoint 1tb

Probably should have waited more than the 2 days I've been using Vista to start trying to give advice on it...Least I know whats causing it if it happens to me now!

Dont know if its just me, but I also find if you have more than one HDD installed, the ones without OS installed go to sleep and I can hear them spin up now and again.

Control Panel --> Power Options --> Edit Plan Settings --> Change Advanced Power Settings --> Hard disk --> Turn off hard disk after --> Set time

See your main HDD won't shut down because you're always using it, but your secondary will.

Yer i have! Is that bad?

Not at all. SP1 is brilliant.

I wouldn't recommend that, I'd actually recommend ensuring the hard drives don't turn off after a certain time. When my hard drives were set to go off after inactivity I was getting major lag in games after that amount of time.

I also personally don't like it, even for secondary drives as when you want to use it you have to wait for it to spin up before the drives folders will open up.
