hi, i have just built my new first pc today, i installed windows to a sata 2 drive i already had, but i bought a western digital 640gb hard drive and it didnt see it when i was installing windows and it dosent see it in my computer.

i dont know why, i have checked the connections are plugged it in to a differernt sata plug on the motherboard.

any thoughts?

I think it is because you need to format the drive to NTFS - try a program like gparted make a live CD out of it and boot into it and then hopefully you should see the WD HDD = from there you should be able to format it to NTFS. WHen you boot into windows after doing this you should see the drive.

So you didn't install OS into it but to that other drive?

Put diskmgmt.msc into Run-dialog and partition and format that WD.

Just bought an Hitachi 2TB HDD and trying to initialise it but it doesn't show up in disk management. I'm trying to do it by esata so not sure if that's the problem there. Been ages since I did one so do I have to connect it directly to my board?

Looks like the buggers dead! Connected it to the board and still nothing, it doesn't spin up so I'll have to RMA it now.

Have you tried more than one set of cables on it?

Yes, tried it with the cables that work with a drive already in my machine and then with another set. I also have a sharkoon external esata caddy and that didn't work. I also have an icybox sata caddy in my pc and that didn't work either. I downloaded the hitachi disk file software but you need a floppy to boot it and I don't have any!

I'll try it on my htpc tomorrow but I wont hold my breath :(
