Hard drive recovery software?

Testdisk can give you the option to list and copy files across to another drive. If repair isn't working, try using it to copy files across as this might be your best bet to save important files

i cants ee the option to recover files? all it tells me is that i can do a quick search, deep search or simply try and fix MFT or boot sector?

do quick search and then at the bottom it will list some options and I think P lists your files

A list will appear and an option to copy files. I think they will be copied to C drive or wherever testdisk is installed. Look on the testdisk site to find out for sure

it will copy a folder at a time so if you have one folder with 1.5 TB check your c drive or whatever has space, otherwise go into the folder and select subfolders one at a time.

I have found the Windows based recovery tools not as good as DOS or LIVE CD versions.

Tiramisu which is now Ontrack Data Recovery (Kroll) is a tool I have used in the past for total hdd file recovery and found to be very good.

Testdisk is also a tool which I have used before to repair/rebuild hdds which have suffered damage/loss of the MBR/MFT - but you will need to let them scan the whole disk.

Needless to say to should not do any WRITE operations to the hdd you are trying to recover. Get another hdd of the same size to recover to OR clone to then try any software tools on that.

Good luck.

A problem I had in the past..

During XP install, I accidentally delete the partition from my external drive. But I didn't write anything to it (Windows files etc)

Testdisk saved me, I'll try it now in a VM and let you know what to do.

Testdisk Guide when partition has only been 'deleted'

For Windows, select 'INTEL' as the drive type
