hard drive tested working but not when connected to mobo?

I've just got a new build running but am having trouble with it's sata hhd..

I've tested the drive works inside an external usb caddy and I've had a cd drive attached to the sata port on the mobo (to install os) and it works fine. So both those things work. However when I connect the hard drive up to the board and turn on, the os (win7) isn't recognising the drive? I've gone into the bios and it's not showing up there too.. Quick thoughts from anyone? I'm a bit baffled.:confused::(

Making the DOS boot USB drive is a bit of a pain and can't be done on the offending chipset I.e. A different computer

It can be done on the same computer, you just have to use the SATA 2 ports rather than SATA 3. I've done it with the exact same board and drive.

And you can use the HP USB tool to create the DOS flash drive.

Borden could you explain what you mean by sata 2 and 3 ports?

The top 2 blue SATA ports on the board are SATA 3 (6Gbps) Whereas the bottom two (red and black) are SATA 2 (3Gbps). The Samsung F3 should work on the SATA 2 ports. Plug it into the Red slot and you should be able to see it in the BIOS. You can carry on using it in there if you want, but it's probably best to just update the firmware to save future hassle.

Once you have downloaded the firmware from the link somebody posted above, you will need to create a DOS boot USB flash drive to launch the firmware update from. Download the HP USB Flash tool from here and you will also need the Win98 boot files, here. Install the HP tool and open it. Select your flash drive (it will be erased so make sure it's empty first). Tick 'Create dos startup disk'. When it asks you for the boot files, point it to the folder where you extracted the Win98 boot files. It should then create your DOS startup drive. Then copy the samsung firmware update file onto the flash drive and reboot. Unplug all drives except for the Samsung and boot to the flash drive. When you get to the command prompt type in the firmware update file name and it should do the rest from there.

Just one other quick question, the update doesn't erase the contents of the hdd does it?

I'll backup essential stuff anyway but just thought I'd check first.. haven't got the space to backup the entire drive.
 
No it doesn't. I also backed up just in case as you can never be too safe. I've done it on two drives now and both went smoothly.
