hi,

Is it normally for a hard drive to to make a very quite sound when in use (say downloading something)! most drive i've ever had have made a faint sound! just woudering how normally this is?

If it sounds like someone dragging a bag of skulls down a flight of stairs, kiss goodbye to your data.
 
Most drives, if you listen, make a slight whirring sound and a bit of a just-audiable crackle. You might get the occasional click aswell.

Anything loud enough to notice all the time is likely bad news, but if you can only hear it when the system is idling quietly without much background noise, it's just it working. Being mechanical, it's always going to produce some noise.
