Hi guys, I couold really use your help as I'm stumped as to what my problem might be here!

My rig is a core i-7 930 @3.8ghz, with 12gig of RAM, 850watt psu and Gigabyte x58-udA motherboard. I have 1 SSD as a boot drive and 2x500gig spinpoint drives for storage.

I recently added 6 gig of RAM to the computer to bump it up to 12, (I'm a photographer by trade so I need A LOT of RAM!) but since I added the RAM my pc has occasionally lost both 500gig drives!? Usually a restart solves the problem but It means i loose all my icons and directories get muddled up in the process. As its a work pc i'd like to fix the issue before it becomes serious, do you think I need to push up the uncore perhaps or maybe the vdimm?

Any help would be appreciated!
Atb,

Would be interested in whats is wrong as i have this sometimes to, as you say a restart sorts it, i always loose the same drive, very odd indeed.

To be honest, if your livelihood depends on your PC I'd call in a decent PC technician..

However, i would go back to the original RAM configuration to see if the problem persists. If it doesn't then it would appear to be a RAM problem. bear in mind though, that the extra memory will require more power draw, so check you have enough juice from the PSU.

Use memtest86+ to verify the memory is operative. Try using one of the newest memory sticks at a time and try the single sticks in different slots and so on.. If one stick of memory fails in all slots, then its almost certainly a RAM problem. If the working RAM stick works in one slot but not another, then this is certainly going to be a memory controller problem. This could be CPU or Motherboard depending on the platform.

Check that the memory is set to the correct settings i.e. VDIMM and latency timings all match. Check the manufacturers website for details. If the latency of the newer RAM is slower than the existing, then this too could cause instability.. i.e. if you had CL8 before but have installed CL9, then you'll need to slacken the timings so they both operate at the slower timings in this case, CL9 becuase the newer modules can't keep up..

If your memory looks ok, then you may need to check your PSU:

Check the power cables coming into the drive.
Hope that helps
