On my 290X it pre-buffers the full 4GB and my 7970 pre-buffers the full 3GB but both play okay on Ultra @ 1200P. My guess is that the game simply buffers whatever the ram will allow, whether or not it actually needs it at the time. I bet 2GB GTX680's etc will also play smoothly at reasonable resolutions.SoM does use more than 3GB VRAM at max on 1080p...
