harddrive settings on gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R

still trying to learn this new bios but i have a few questions,
what are the best settings for my wd aaks 400gig hd in the bios,
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode - IDE or AHCI?
using IDE mode at the mo but if i switched would that mess up windows?

and what would be the best sata socket to use, one of the orange sockets or the purple one?

when i run xp in ahci mode it bluescreens and reboots.

general consensus states the orange sockets best because they dont have the slight latency occured by the secondary controller.

however some say the purple ones are better.
