Meh, so my paint skilzz are crap.

i am sure a more accurate comparison will turn up sooner or later.

That stock cooler system will have to run flat out at full load, its going to be crazy for noise.

You may notice, the older x2/5970 cards had the gpu's fairly close, you can see from the picture on the back that the gpu's are separately by a much bigger gap, you can't see the stock cooler so can't comment on its noise but I'd say the likelyhood is the fan will be mounted in the middle which will improve temps dramatically/decrease noise vs the 5970.

Personally I would hope they go triple slot on this one and a proper fan and not a blower, in which case quiet and cool wouldn't be an issue, if they went with the Gainward style phantom setup they could do it under triple slot, considering it won't allow for anything more than 2 6990's in a system, anyone that can afford 2x6990's can also afford a top end mobo and case which can handle a triple slot cooler with ease.

THe problem, 5870 coolers work on 6870/6970's, a 5970 cooler ain't going to work on a 6990 so it will take a while for 3rd party cooling and probably mean AIB's will take longer than usual to offer good alternative versions, though maybe thats part of the reason for the delay, to allow Asus/Sapphire/Gigabyte to get new versions of the improved coolers done.

Isn't DX11 mode broken in the Dragon Age Demo? I was getting terrible FPS with it enabled and therefore don't understand why they used it as a performance benchmark.
