Hi,

I've an issue with a networked harddrive that we use to back all of our photos up too in that it's incredbly slow.

Each year has a folder, each month has a folder and you'll get 100-500 photos for each month and it's only higher if we've been away or the month has as special occassion.

Now, the hdd is a 1tb USB3 version, (the other i've got for other files works great) and it's painfully slow to read from. It's slow from my PC, loads the jpgs up but then takes ages to show the thumbnails. Over the network my wife's software just keeps not responding it's that slow.

I've got it set as a photo folder + sub folders, i've tried disconnecting and reconnecting it to other ports/cables etc but no joy.

I've had the issue before an I am sure I've had to reset something or tweak something to correct it but I can't find it now.

Any ideas on how to speed this up??

No issues with speed generally between the 2 machines.

Win 7 desktop i7 via ethernet to sky router
Win 7 Asus i3 laptop via wifi to sky router (same issue if it's connected via ethernet)

I am positive now the issue with my machine and the hdd itself as it's barely loading for me and there is no activity on it other than me opening folders. No issues with health/defrag either.

What about connecting to a different machine?

Have you ran a health check on the disk? If it's got lots of failed sectors that are relocating, that is likely to slow it down? I would also run some benchmarking from the machine it's connected to, to check what sort of read/write speeds it can get.

Also how full is the drive? I'm guessing it's mechanical rather than SSD - do all files (even older ones) take a while to load?
