Am thinking of getting 2 x 500gb or 2 x 400gb hardrives for Video editing

would be using these drives just for media - all applications and os would be running on the standard 320gb that comes with the mac pro

if i wanted to upgrade in the future - could i run 4 hardrives in raid stripe?

Yes you could do that although you will have to reinstall OSX, however if one of your drives were to fail, because you are stripping across all four hard drives you would loose all your data (unless you backup to another machine or device).

Would be more sensible to stripe two drives and use them as your system drive, and mirror the other two drives and use them for your data.

RAID 0+1 TBH.

So you need 4x500Gbs.

Getting the data off the current HD would require an external hd casing, which doesn't cost a lot.

Although my plan for a Mac Pro is 2x150Gb Raptors in RAID 0 and two 1TB RAID 1

:)
