Hi all,

I've got the following (old / aging!) hardware:

  • Asus P5K Premium/WiFi-AP Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
  • G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PK PC2-8500C5 (2x2GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK)
  • Asus GeForce 9800 GX2 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail
  • Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM (WD1500ADFD)

I've just ordered a G.Skill Falcon 128GB SSD, with a view to removing my current 2 x WD Raptors and installing Windows 7 RC.

Couple of questions:

1: Would this setup be worthy of installing the 64it version of W7? or would I be better off staying with the 32bit version?

2: With budget in mind, what would be a worthy (price conscious) upgrade from the Q6600? (if any?) with a view to running W7? Ideally I don't want to ditch my motherboard yet (Asus P5K Premium) as I can't afford it. So realising this is an old motherboard, are there any better CPU's that will clock better than the Q6600 that will fit in this motherboard? (cooling on air btw!)

Thanks for any advice.

1: Yes its worth, go for 64bit version you can adress more ram with no hassle because atm loads of sofware can run on 64bit .
2: You should keep your Q6600 just because not really much performance gain to uprade to Q9xxx. You have a good board there so not much to worry about when you can have a 3.5Ghz from your Q6600.

Hope that help your mind ;)

Thanks Thanh, appreciate the help :)

I'll stick with what I have :) (removing the 2 x Raptors will hopefully help me keep the inside a bit cooler anyway!)

deffinatly go 64 bit, originally with 64 bit windows, there was a shortage of driver, thats sorted now, no dissadvantages to w7 64 bit so long as you have a compatable processor

also it will allow you to adrread all your ram whixh the 32 bit version would not
