Hello,

I've just been on Cod4 and things were going fine when all of a sudden the game stopped, and my screen was merging between red and the game screenshot. I could still hear people on Teamspeak for a few more seconds before things went quiet. couldn't do a thing except for reset the pc to which i was confronted with this

Now this was after a second reboot once I'd seen the odd screen before. I took off the cover and gave everything a blow with my rocketblower (was due a clean anyway) reset again and things seem to be ok.

Temps at the moment across 4 cores are around 30 - 35degrees, with 48 for the GPU. Not sure what these were like during gameplay but is it just a case of needing to get things cleaned out or is it possible that the GPU is on its way out?

Will put Cod4 back on and see if the problem persists.

update, since posting this I had windows open for about ten mins and this happened

Got speedfan open and doing a running check on any abnormal temps while in windows.

update again. Appears to be the graphics driver. Got a blue screen saying the error lies with the nv4_disp.dll. So going into safe mode with networking to download new drivers.

Looks like hardware problem to me mate, possibly vram. How are the GPU temps? Driver problem would not give you a BIOS screen thats garbled.

I did get the nv4_disp.dll error on the blue screen. it seems to be ok on boot just now but when i tried COD4 again it immediately crashed out again with the red merging with the display image like the second picture i posted. I've updated the drivers to the 197.45 set.

I did have a couple of direct x errors when i was playing a couple of the mod maps on COD4 but didn't think anything of it. Will see what happens now and see if theres anything i might have to change within COD itself :(

EDIT:

Failing that i will try another pci slot for the card to see if thats possibly at fault. if not then i might just buy a new graphics card.

The Gpu Temps aren't too bad sitting around the 50 mark. A couple of times that I have popped out of Cod to check other stuff I've noticed the gpu temp around 65degrees but nothing too horrific.

With the updated drivers its still crashing out instantly on cod but windows is fine. Will try some other stuff tomorrow after work.

its a nividia 9800gt card. Forgot a took my sig off today. Will post full spec tomorrow but i'm sure it can be found on search results in one of my first topics on here.

This is a classic example of failing Video RAM i'm afraid.

Would you mind if I use that screen shoot on my website?

yeah you can use that for your site.

I'll have to check the warranty for the card to see if i can get it RMA'd through OCuk cos its only a year and a half old so may be able to get it replaced?

yea call them and let us know how you get on :)

tried them tonight after work but couldn't get through / all lines busy so going to give it a try tomorrow at lunch. The funny thing is I couldn't find any sort of information on warranty within the graphics card literature  which i thought was a bit strange.

you want to know something its actually an asus 512mb 9800gt not nividia after all.

Its still an nvidia card, they produce the reference design, then companys such as asus, bfg, evga and xfx etc place their name on them.

I had a suspicion it may be that as it uses nividia drivers! Either way its slightly buggered :D Took it out the pc tonight gave it a final clean with the rocketblower but didn't make a blind bit of difference. Booted up and within seconds it screwed up. Its now out of the pc and in its box again. see what happens tomorrow when i phone OCuk.

Well I got through to a nice chap at OCuk and explained the situation, gave my reference number so he could call up the information. He explained that the card has a 3 year warranty (1 and a half still to run on it) but for orders over a year old i should contact the manufacturer, but in the case of ASUS this didn't apply so I'm to send it into OCuk for testing and if they find it the same as I've shown in the screenshots here then they will send it back for repair / replace. If the card cant be replaced then i will get a credit notice or a different card of similar standing (pricewise) from the time i bought the card (around 87quid).

So I'll pop that in the post tomorrow and play the waiting game now :( Silly laptop cant do anything compared to my pc :D

Quick update. Sent it away yesterday and already got an email from ocuk telling me it's to be sent back to manufacturer for repair or replacement! Quick service, well done ocuk :)
