Hardware glitch - at my wits end!

Running a HP Microserver N40L for about three years now and never a single issue. Mainly used to run Kodi and as a server for all my media to stream to the rest of the house.

Whilst in use the other night I had issues of it restarting for no reason whatsoever during a film which I thought nothing of. When booting back up I'd get a black screen with a flashing white cursor and nothing would happen - no boot, nothing. Checking the BIOS I'd find that the SSD (boot drive) would disappear from my boot order. Let it sit unplugged for a while and eventually it would reappear and, once set as the first boot drive, it worked again.

This happened over and over again and after many BSODs it finally gave up the ghost after I (probably foolishly) tried to clone the drive to a new partition on one of my big media drives and my SSD was converted to a dynamic disk. Since then I haven't been able to boot the system whatsoever.

Tried various ISOs on a 16gb USB stick and set it to boot from USB in BIOS - Ubuntu, Windows 7 and Windows 10 but all I'm getting is the same white blinking cursor on a black screen and nothing happens no matter how long I leave it.

Also tried resetting BIOS settings to default, reset CMOS. Nothing at all. I've deleted my SSD now using some RAID screen on BIOS so that should be totally blank ready for a clean install of another OS. Just that I can't get the USB stick to install a new OS!

Any ideas before I bite the bullet and buy a new server?

Thanks.

what make SSD is it? have you checked for any firmware updates?

I had a Samsung 840 as a storage drive that would randomly disappear and the only way to get it to work would be to reseat the sata cable.

try a different sata cable and port as this could be causing issues as well.

Yeah I've unplugged the three hard drives in all manner of permutations, just get the same blinking cursor.

It's a Crucial M4 64gb drive. I've updated the firmware on it once a while ago. Had the motherboard out yesterday, unplugged every cable and put everything back together - still the same.

My last real option looks to be finding a Windows install CD and trying my external DVD ROM drive. If that doesn't work then I'm out of ideas.
