Hardware is easy innovation is not.

Any company with plenty of money could build a powerful console and pay 3rd party companies to make games for them but no one can buy what Nintendo have. innovation dosn't always go well it can turn out more like a gimmik and fail like the Virtualboy but I think if it it wasn't for Nintendo and their attemps to constantly do something new we'd be in a sorry state. I think if one day we ever lost Nintendo which will never happan the game industry would be completely boring where things hardly change.

Gamers need Nintendo even if they don't realise it or buy Nintendo consoles. Also if there was no Nintendo who would Sony have to copy off? :p

I think you are wanted back at the Gamespot forums.

Hmmm... I am going to be wearing a flame proof suite in this post.

But as someone else correctly pointed out in another thread (sorry I don't remember who it was) Nintendo have done a lot of Innovation, but then so have a lot of console/PC makers.

Examples:

First CD drive (philips/Mega CD I believe).
First cartridge probablly something like the Atari.
Who made videos remotely even popular... Atari.
Who made analogue sticks? PC joystick makers like MS and whoever else (I remember when the mega drive was JUST released and a friend had an old analogue stick he used for flight games).

Now, Nintendo have done a lot for the gaming industry, but then they have done a lot of stuff that fails too.

Like for example the "visor that goes over your head, try to ignore that fact there is a good chance it will lead to blindness"

In terms of games though, yes they have done a massive amount of original stuff, but then you could argue anyone "back in the day" also did. Hmmm... I suppose this post has a bit of an anti ninty feel, and I dont mean it to come accross that way.

I really do respect them for all the games they have produced, and for consoles like the N64 which brought things like 4 joypad ports to the norm, and for games designers they have for creating Mario and Zelda, and they have done a massive amount for the industry, I am just nore sure it more than Sega/Atari/Earlier PC creators have done. Maybe they have done a bit more, but I am not sure it's the masses that is believed.

Innovation Nintendo did nothing to innovate the Gamecube, it was ruined by a lack of games, to me Nintendo have to market at the kid side of adults, if Nintendo went with GTA kind of games and no fun games it would get slaughtered. The market has changed so much in 10 years.

I had a Nes N64 and Gamecube.

I think the OP was suggesting that we respect the fact that ninty have, and continue to, make and create great games rather than following mas market trends. This is despite the fact that they have seen almost every single old-time competitior fall by the wayside, and indeed still risk that themselves. What ninty do for the gaming community these days is provide an alternative this is the key. Whether you buy MS or Sony you are effectively buying into the same thing big brutish over hyped commercialised mass market electronics. Hard, unrelenting and sleek. Nintendo is the fluffy squishy alternative that makes you grin from ear to ear and genarally feel all warm inside.

This dose make me seem very fanboy I know but I'm going to stick to Nintendo as the spirit for gaming is still there and weather different things they try succeed or fail I respect Nintendo simply because they try. I have a Gamecube to it could have done with more support but what games are on it are all very good my fav out of all the games I have is Eternal Darkness. Folks for those that have never played a Gamecube you have to atleast try one now when you can pick them up for £25 just to get a feel of the control pad it's the best design ever. When you hold it it feels like it's part of you hand it's so comfy.

I admit the Gamecube controller does fit perfectly into your hands, but the button layout is horrible.

Quoted for truth.

Personally I am VERY interested to see how playing games with a Wiimote and Nunchuck controller (rather than the 'classic' controller for sale) will actually work. Because it'll ether be fantastic or a load of poop.

I've read accounts of hands on gaming saying that it's nothing like as tiring as you're making out. You don't need to make huge exaggerated movements or anything.

Also, someone mentioned Nintendo seeing big competitors fall by the wayside... I think it says a lot that you can now buy Sega games for Nintendo systems. That's quite something.
