Hardware woes

Dear Overclockers, underclockers and hardware guru's.

Here is a brief insite into my computer hardware spec,
mobo: GA-EP35-DS4 (no prizes for guessing manufacturer ~ sorry)
cpu: Intel core 2 Quad Q6600 G0
mem: 4x 1GB OCZ Reaper 1150Mhz

Recently while playing eve-online the eve client would crash to desktop randomly with no error in the eve-logs to suggest it was caused by the client. So i figured it was an issue with windows and so done a re-install. When win7 booted for first time I got a blue screen (didn't log the code) figured it was a hardware fault. So i ran some tests...

Loading the computer up with 'ultimate boot CD v4.1.1 I loaded and ran Memtest86+ v1.70 on each ram stick to 100% pass, all four sticks passed and reported no errors.

I then ran the same memtest with all four sticks of ram and was instantly presented with a huge list of errors from test one onwards.

However when I changed the memory multiplier from 4.00~ to 2.00 I recieved no errors when running the same memtest.

Since changing from the 1066 bootstrapping aka 4.00~ to 800 bootstrapping 2.00 the memory frequency is 667/533 which is low as far as i am aware considering my ram is able to work in excess of 1066 infact it is rated to 1150.

right now a windows pc on stable hardware is needed and if that means running at the lower speeds so be it. however i would like to get this system stable again and running a FSB of at least 1066.

I am confused as to what is actually happening here and would appreciate any help getting this old work horse back up to speed.

Regards

I'm a Pasty-muncher too, being cornish n' all =)

This isn't a new build, had ran perfectly for the past 4 years or so that i've had this machine. All voltages are set to auto as I have no-idea what i'm doing when it comes to toying around with that sort of thing.

Could you mention the recomended voltages for NB, FSB, CPU, etc.

Power supply is a Hiper 880W.

and thank you for your reply

When I looked in the BIOS i see no mention of north bridge voltages.. instead i'm given only these options to tweek.

DDR2
PCI-E
FSB
(G)MCH
Loadline calibration
CPU
-CPU VCORE

The RAM timings are set 5-5-5-15 the rest i leave alone as I can't find the info anywhere as to what these settings should be.

okay, so...

switched timings to 5-5-5-18 and changed the (G)MCH from default to +0.200v
I then changed the multiplier back to 4.00~ and got a blue screen on windows boot up, so reset it back down to 2.00.
I hope this makes some sense to you.

My bios only allows me to add incriments to a standard voltage on the ddr2 voltage settings with no explanation to what it's default voltage is... gigabyte mobo's are a nightmare imo.

managed to get my memory multiplier to 3.00 and boot into windows, still can't get it to 4.00~ when i try; i get bsod and instant-reboot.

667/800

Well...

Ram volt = +0.3v
Ram X = 4.00~ 667/1066
(G)MCH = +0.200v

Windows loaded up first time round with this error...
The system process 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe' terminated unexpectedly with status code -1073741819. The system will now shut down and restart.

Restart never happened so i manually done it with the power switch.

No drivers loaded currently on this xpx64 install and nothing to stress the setup with as yet.

Are either of you willing and able to get the ram to 1150mhz???

Thank you both for getting me this far.

EDIT :: just ran memtest v1.70 again breifly and still get errors from the start of the tests.

computer has become completely unusable since applying the above settings and am no longer able to complete an xpx64 install.
rolled the bios back to defaut F1
run out of ideas.. could it be bios battery, motherboard or ram that has given up the ghost.

regards daniel.

i have since managed to install xpx64. In bios i turned everything off that is onboard.
through-out this period of things going wrong i have seen many 0x0* errors pointing to HDD, MEM, GFX, Worms... you name it, i've probably seen that error code today. yet here i am on that computer, currently running two ram sticks picked at random @1066mhz.

currently in eve-online with all graphics options set to low (safemode) taking down my domination tower and getting ready to suspend accounts as I think this issue is not going to go away easily.

I have an inclination that the usb wireless dongle (zyxel) could be an issue, i have a spare belkin and will give that a go. i'll also try replacing the cmos battery too.
I fear that the 4870 gfx card is fooked and also as you say the ram slots themselfs maybe to blame because each ram stick worked in the first slot during memtests.

I'd like to thank you for your help and welcome any further suggestions you have.

update:

it would seem that the two red ram slots are causing the problems as windows does not load with ram in them. It's definatly not the ram as i have swicthed them about and done all sorts of tests as outlined above.

So it would seem the board is faulty "being pretty much the only item without lifetime warranty" and so a new board would need to be fitted.
for now though 2gb of ram will just have to do... unless you know a way to fix it.

would like to thank you for being here to bounce ideas off with, you've been a great help. will have to get you a pasty and an ale next time you're down this way.

regards daniel.
