looks like the UAF are causing all the trouble again, all I see on skynews is angry young muslims.

From the independant:

Despite the imam's pleas for local Muslims to go home and ignore the protests, by mid-afternoon a crowd of some 1,000 anti-fascist campaigners, predominantly young Asian men, had gathered outside the mosque in a striking show of force.

Some wore masks over their faces but most simply waited patiently looking for signs of any activity. It was clear that the vast majority of those who had come to launch a counter demonstration were not from the area.

Wow, an anti-facist protest outside a mosque is largely attended by young Asian men. How completely unsurprising. What ethnicity did you expect them to be?

*edit*

Information on the UAF, for those who want to know:

The group was formed in late 2003 as part of a coalition between the Anti-Nazi League and the National Assembly Against Racism, the TUC and leading British unions such as T&G (now Unite) and UNISON in response to electoral successes by the BNP.

Its chairman is the former Labour Party mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, and its joint secretaryship is shared by Weyman Bennett, the national organiser of the Anti-Nazi League and a member of the central committee of the Socialist Workers Party, and Sabby Dhalu, formerly of the National Assembly Against Racism (NAAR).

The organisation has signatories and members from across the political spectrum including MPs from all of Britain’s leading political parties and a number of members of the Labour cabinet. Other notable signatories include Holocaust survivor Henry Guterman.

At Unite Against Fascism's 2007 national conference, speakers ranged from cabinet minister Peter Hain to Edie Friedman of the Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE) and Dr. Muhammad Abdul Bari from the Muslim Council of Britain, as well as figures from the major UK trade unions.

Right-wing members include Conservative Party leader David Cameron and former Conservative MP Sir Teddy Taylor.

I'm just surprised that 1000 Muslim anti holocaust-denial protesters would show up like that to express their solidarity with Israel and Karl Marx.

What?

Are you accusing them of being holocaust deniers, or are you saying that they're against holocaust denial? And what does Israel have to do with the protest? Or Karl Marx, for that matter?

all i see on tv is angry muslim rent a mob.

Your answer is in bold.

"Anti-facist protest at mosque attracts large numbers of Muslims. Police baffled. 'Why Muslims? At a mosque, of all places?'"

I mean, really...

I'm saying if the English defense league traveled back in time and protested Benito Mussolini himself, the counter-protesters would be labeled as "anti-fascists" by the newspapers.

Just call it what it is... 975 Muslim thugs and 25 pasty faced "media studies" students with a hard on for Marxism.

English Defence League: Future Demonstrations

2009

* 13th September 2009: London
The Home Office bent over backwards to ban us from Luton, yet Hezbollah, a Muslim Terrorist Organisation's supporters are due to march through London this coming Sunday. I wonder if we have missed the Al-Qaida March? We urge everybody who can to come to London to oppose this. We will be meeting around Trafalgar square. More to follow.

* 19th September 2009: Luton
March against the ever growing population of Islamic Extremists, and the home of some of the most un-savoury Al-Qaeda supporters in the UK. This Demonstration has been Banned by the home office, and has subsequently been cancelled.

seems to me that this country is too scared to say/do anything to this loud, angry minority

So, it turns out that the Muslim rent-a-crowd folks weren't actually part of the UAF:

Eight people have been arrested after riot police intervened to stop clashes between Muslims and anti-Islamic protesters outside a London mosque on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

About 1,000 mostly Muslim protesters, many wearing masks, were involved in running scuffles around the newly-built Harrow Central Mosque, in north-west London, following a demonstration by a fringe anti-Islamic group.

Members of a group called United Against Fascism also attended the rally in support of the mosque.

Police moved in after the crowd threw sticks and stones at about a dozen mostly shaven-headed protesters.

A police spokesman says items including bricks and bottles were thrown at officers after they intervened.

The demonstration by a small number of white men was organised by a group calling itself Stop Islamification of Europe, which said ahead of the demo that it planned to remain peaceful.

It also seems clear that the Muslims started the violence on this occasion.

I was there as I live in Wealdstone and my bus goes through that road, but didn't stand a chance on the day. The entire town of Harrow just ground to a halt. I ended up walking through them all just to get to the other side.

It was mostly peaceful. Community leaders were pleading with the hyperactive kids to GTFO the roads but half were too busy screaming, the other half were on their mobile phones. The cozzers were great and in good spirits, hell I saw fit to take the mick out of a 4ft police chick who looked like yoda.

Things got out of hand come 6pm or so as a rowdy bunch of peeps came out and started hurling abuse at the crowd. They got chased down the road by the crowd, and then a few skirmishes with the cozzers ensued. The sad thing was that the EDL weren't really there in numbers and yet they 'won'. The town was stuck in time, and there were skirmishes with the police from the mainly hyped up muslim youths wanting their faces on TV.

It was clear trouble was brewing, when I saw kids walking upto the area with bulges (hurhur) in their jackets. I felt sad because it got out of hand as predicted by many. As usual the media were there but went OTT on their reports.

They are too scared to do anything, EDL isnt a far right group, but has been labelled as one.

Speaking as someone who currently lives in the western half of London, I'd have expected to see trouble a little further south, what with groups like Combat 18 having a presence in Hayes...

Hold on, those are the only places you can protest, when EDL tried to protest outside of westminster they were denied.
When a new area is being used for development, protestors would normally gather there, so what makes this different? why does this make it racist?
In the 70s CND would protest outside of air bases, greenpeace would protest next to ships, the muslim protest outside of parliament about govenrment policies towards the middle east ( you can say this was a racial protest), so were do you expect people to protest if they dont want another mosque being build?

(EDL)Plus when have you heard or seen an offensive placard with abusive racist words NEVER, when have you heard them say any racial remarks NEVER.
What they are saying is hold on we can live together but why the need to keep building mosques, this is britain not a middle eastern country.

It was a general comment about where I expected to see ethnic\racial tensions, not a specific mosque project.

That's a matter for whoever owns the land and the local council, in legal terms. It isn't as though Harrow lacks other places of worship like churches etc.
