Has anybody here used a tablet or phone for streaming instead of a box?

A thought occurred to me ages ago that it should be possible to use a tablet/phone to stream.
Well I know it's possible because When I go into my outdoor gym I plug my phone into my TV and stream something from my NAS to my TV over WiFi.
This means I could just leave my S3 plugged in and using a bluetooth multimedia keyboard/remote I should be able to control it from the other side of the room.
Has anybody tried this and what keyboard/remote would suit best?

I used to use an RII RT-MWK02+ for that kind of thing but I can't really recommend it was ok but always felt a bit lacking somehow - there are probably newer and better options now.

(Think partly was put off it due to the Windows drivers needing separate activation (lame) but also seeming to install some kind of DRM for a driver....... I wasn't even totally confident the official drivers weren't infected with some kind of malware tbh).

I use a bluetooth Logitech keyboard, has a track pad, was intended for a ps3 but works great with windows tablet.

Do you just leave it plugged in and then use XBMC/Plex?

Well no, I used it to watch skygo on the TV, but basically any streaming should work, its just a computer and a keyboard, if you can get the screen on the tv, then your OK.

Why not make it really easy for yourself and just buy a £63 Amazon Fire TV?

Likely only going to be £20 more than the cost of a decent Bluetooth remote / keyboard and the Bluetooth remote that the AFTV comes with is pretty great.

Amazon Fire TV can naively have Plex installed (if you've got a server to run the Plex Media Server) or others have been having a lot of success with side loading Kodi (the new name for XBMC) which should handle streaming off your NAS just fine. Job done.

EDIT: Wait, sorry, if you're looking to outfit your gym with a decent media steaming option I still think the AFTV is the best route to go. If you genuniely just want to have some fun using your phone to steam stuff then my friend used a "Satechi BT MediaRemote" (£27) as remote shutter for his phone for a while

because I've followed & contributed to the Fire TV discussion and it is still locked down.
I have several devices around the house doing nothing so thought I could put them to use.

I've found it difficult to get skygo onto the TV. How do you do it - through a cable? Also, which windows tablet do you use - I was thinking of getting one but not sure what to go for

I used to do it using my encore windows 8.1 tablet and an HDMI cable, windows just sees the TV as a second monitor.
Cancelled sky a few months ago though.

Ah. So HDMI cable will work from a windows tablet? Was wondering about getting a Linx 8 tablet and trying it on that. Works from a laptop but I could do with something smaller.

Most of the 7-8" Windows tablets have a micro HDMI port on them, the 10" ones can have a range of ports including sometimes having full sized HDMI instead of the micro port. Dunno about MHL support I'm guessing that doesn't work like it does on Android tablets.
