im new to all this i wanted to back up my blu rays so i could use plex to play these when im not in and bored. i was wondering if anyone has encoded them or just kept them as they are I dont know if i should just buy a 4tb drive and keep them as they are or encode them and make them smaller.

my blu ray collection maybe 400-500 i cant remember but not all of these would be ripped

I use MakeMKV to just pull the main video file and the english audio tracks, this brings each Blu-ray down to around 20-25GB.

I keep the full quality since storage is cheap and it seems pointless to rip a Blu-ray and then reduce the quality.

As above, rip them as the direct stream, keeping only the main movie + English audio.

As has been said above, this brings each film to around 20-25GB - and then as long as you've got a half-decent Plex server, this can the be transcoded to whatever quality you need for the target device, and when used inside the house, you then still have perfect picture & sound quality, but without any of the stupidity of extra languages or menus.

Same as above, MakeMKV to rip with HD audio and forced english subs if present.

The only BD I have ever had an issue with is Pirates of the Caribbean. I have the trilogy box set and the first film just will no rip no matter what I try or what software I use :(

Are desktop Blu Ray drives region free? I remember wanting to get one, but I remember there being something making it a right hassle to use (it was either the region, or something about needing PowerDVD to play films or something. Ring a bell with anyone?).
