I'm considering purchasing an ex-motability car and I've got a couple of quick questions...

When having to change the tax type with the DVLA do you actually have to go down there or can it all be done online/by mail? How long does this take?

What is to stop you buying an ex-motability car on the cheap and then selling it on a week later to make a tidy profit?

Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with ex-motability that they can share?

Thanks,

G

Nothing. There is nothing especially cheap about ex-motability cars - infact they are normally more expensive than other cars of the same age because they tend to be much lower mileage. It's just the same as buying any other car and selling it on for a profit. Normally there is no profit to be had.

Unless...

You buy it from auction, where most motability cars are sold into the trade to appear on forecourts. Of course there is nothing to stop you doing this but it's nothing to do with motability is it, its just... buying and selling cars for money. It's called being a car dealer.

As for motability, I personally wouldnt buy one because almost without exception they all tend to be utterly horrible cars. Crappy MPV's, terrible base model hatchbacks, etc etc.

But if you've found a car you like there is no reason not to buy it just because its motability but it doesn't make any more special than any other car of the same age and mileage.

Motability is the UK's largest fleet operator IIRC, therefore its simply another ex fleet car.

Nothing wrong with ex mobility cars. My dads VW Touran came from Blackbushe Auction and was ex mobility. They have generally been maintained well because as Fox says they are a fleet car. You do need to look at the condition though as different people will look after them differently and sometimes they will have had special equipment fitted which may leave damage when removed.

I cant see much profit in buying them to sell on though, my dad saved a couple of grand on his car but by the time you sell it privately theres another owner on it and for top money people will probably want it from a dealer who will offer some type of warranty.

You have to go to the nearest tax office to change the taxation class.

Plus if the car is taxed with a tax exemption certificate then you'll need to surrender the tax disc aswell unfortunately.
