Has anyone built an island in their kitchen themselves?

We have just bought a new house which has a lovely, spacious kitchen. Our old fitted kitchen had an island built in, the new kitchen does not have one. I've seen a few YouTube videos where people have built their own island using a couple of standard kitchen cabinets joined together and then a worktop fitted on top. Don't need a sink or any plumbing in it as it would be used basically for food preparation and also as a breakfast table with kitchen stools/chairs.

Anyone built one from scratch or can anyone recommend a flat pack solution I can tackle myself?

Thanks

Yep. Kitchen units, level up and then get worktop cut to size. Usually about a 20mm overhang over the doors. If going for stone tops once you have the units leveled they will come out and measure.

That’s how kitchen islands are built, standard units fixed together and some end panels/corners to make it look nice. Add a work surface and you are done.

concern with adding one would be making it match the existing!

That was my confusion when I read the OP. That's how the islands are built.

Thanks folks, I didn't realise that islands were built using existing cabinets - makes sense. Should be fairly straightforward to do. As far as matching is concerned I'll have a look and see what is available to match once we move into the new place in January which is when the entry date is. Can't quite recall the exact colour scheme shade - its mainly a crisp, white kitchen with grey worktops and it is hard to see from the photos on the home schedule so I'll hang fire until we get in then see if it can be matched.

No need to match the island with the rest of the kitchen, go totally different or just different worktops. Also look at waterfall sides depending on budget.
