ordered my parts where available as i had picked my pieces based on looks. (fittings that is), rads where selected based on reviews and again it was wherever I could find them.
Kits are useful as they have everything but even if you don't want a kit you can always look at the contents and just make yourself a list. It is all quite confusing at first but take your time and make sure you select the right tubing to the correct size fittings. Bare in mind that different size fittings will limit your options on makes and the cost will differ.
