Hello,

I'm in the middle of applying to do an Access to HE course in September, with a view to go onto uni to study Engineering.

Has anyone here done an Access course? How did you find it? I'm looking to do it full time for 1 year, I've heard its pretty intense...is this true?

Plus, has anyone got any tips for good universities to apply to for Engineering with an Access course?

Many thanks :)

Hello, I guess you're pretty much following my tracks.

I did a Science and Technology Access Course at Exeter College three years ago. I used to it apply to Plymouth University to do Electronic Engineering, where i've just completed my second year.

It's basically A level standard, and certainly not intense. The one I did was three days a week consisting of Maths, Chemistry, Physics, IT, and a bit of Biology.

I enjoyed it, but found it a touch easy. Then again, your mileage will vary wildly depending on prior experience.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Out of interest, what had you studied previous to the course? Why did you take the course?

How did the application process work, did Plymouth accept you straight away onto a Degree course, or did you need to do a year's Foundation Degree first?

hi

what about doing the foundation engineering year. this then lets you onto the full Beng mechanical engineering course .

a group of lads of my course did it and have no complaints. made the first year of the 'proper' course pretty easy for them too because its all similar and relevant stuff that they learnt.

Because I've only got GCSE's that are a few years old, I wouldn't have been accepted on to a Foundation course. Hopefully I'll be able to get straight onto a Beng course after the Access, if not Foundation degree :)
