Looking to sail to Rotterdam then drive up to Kolding and over the toll bridge to Copenhagen as opposed to the ferry from Puttgarden to Rodby, has anyone done similar? Before I commit to it I would just like to confirm what tolls there are to pay along the way? We'll be travelling in a Ford Custom, 2 of us.

Crossing the Storebælt will cost you 228DKK or around £28.
The Lillebælt is toll-free.
You can cruise at around 150km/h in Denmark without too much problem, so it's usually quicker than taking the ferry.
However, there are currently a fair amount of roadworks on the A7 between Hamburg and Flensburg, as you can see. FWIW, the roadworks on the A1 in Bremen are also a pain.

I strongly recommend driving through the night as the motorways are empty and you can drive flat out all night long, if that's your thing.

Cheers guys, it isn't until next August for the Ironman. Should be cheaper than shipping 3 bikes over... Loose plan was to sail to Rotterdam overnight and drive through the day although I like the idea of empty roads...

Fair enough. I drive up to northern Jutland from Belgium a couple times a year and i find it too stressful doing it during the day with too many dawdlers and too much traffic.
Night-time driving is by far the most relaxing, but it doesn't half mess up your body clock!

I did Italy from the UK which took the same about 14 hours. I totally loved it and would definitely suggest finding places to visit/take a break en-route. It's worth doing and I bet you'd enjoy it, despite being a long journey.

Have driven that exact route up to Sweden as a holiday and thoroughly enjoyed. Worth pointing out you're going past legoland so it'd be rude not to

I've driven from Hamburg to Copenhagen via vejle many times in my previous job. Driving in Denmark is about as dull as dull gets. No scenery / hills to look with the only vaguely interesting part being the bloody bridge as it means you're at least getting close to Copenhagen and away from the tedium.
Have fun!

Ive driven DK to UK many times in the past 10 years and travel between Jutland and Zealand all the time. There is a discount price on the bridge if you travel over on a Friday and return before Monday. As MJT mentioned, the motorway between Hamburg and Flensburg is a car park at the moment :( There used to be a ferry from Essex to Esjberg which was a godsent for me but looks like that routes now stopped. Busiest times on the roads here are from 6-8am and then 3-5pm, most people are working 7 to 3 or 8 to 4, avoid that time and you get the roads to yourself :)

shout if you need any specific info.

Thanks guys, unfortunately it looks like the ferry will land early morning and we'll be moving through Holland into Germany by rush hour... Lunchtime through Denmark and maybe evening rush hour in Copenhagen... Can't really hang around too much though as we will leave UK Wednesday night to arrive in Copenhagen for Thursday T time then;
Register for Ironman Friday,
Rack and pack Saturday
Race Sunday
Cry Monday
Leave Tuesday..

So the only toll we need to worry about will be the bridge from Jutland to Seeland?

OT but which route did you take? I usually break my drive up over a couple of days. 14 hours isn't so bad doing it in one stint and will save me the hassle of hotels.

We actually took 3 days for the route and did France > Belgium > Luxembourg > Switzerland > Italy

Day 1 - Stopped in Belgium, 1 night
Day 2 - Luxembourg couple of hours
Day 2 - Zurich couple of hours
Day 3 - Switzerland 1 night then on to italy

I'm from SE England, do it in 1 day, with 2 dogs!!!! drive down through Germany, Belgium, France, check the dogs through with their passports and then drive on the channel tunnel train, head to my family at the other end. Couple of stops on the way to stretch our legs.
