Looks like a lot of people are selling up from mining and there is a big influx of r9 280/290 on mm and eBay. Would now be a good time to buy a second hand card or should we wait a bit longer?

Personally,i wouldn't touch a 2nd hand mining card, they run at full tilt or near enough 24/7,some do and some don't,buy new and be assured it is new and hasn't been ragged to a inch of its life.

I would buy a 780 instead, seeing how low in price they got and especially here at OCuk you can grab some weekly deals.
I have 2 with prospects for third and I am settled for years to come :D

£350 for a 780 isn't really in the same price range. The 290 is around the £200 mark on ebay

Yes but as already mentioned these cards have been hammered for their life time which is 24/7.

Ultimately you will be dealing with someone to get RMA and you better be confident they will help.

I was tempted but I just don't like the idea of a card being thrashed within an inch of it's life.

Won't of been pushed above stock as you don't over clock to mine, I can't see that kind of usage being an issue

I like second hand cards, i just wouldn't touch an ex miner. You don't know how its been run, i mean, you can get some from people who have kept them spaced apart, cooled room and undervolted. Or you can get from people who have just ran them from stock, in a normal case all bunched up with next to no airflow.

If i was to buy an ex miner it would need to be cheap and from the MM off someone with a decent trust rating. ATM though they're way too expensive for the MM (260+, needs to be 200 at least tbh)

Same for me. I would only buy a second hand card from someone here and wouldn't touch ebay for a bargain, as I wouldn't know the history.

TBH i'm the same , Yes i've had second hand cards gpu's and cpu's but they have come from people i know and are working 100% at the time, they maybe of been ragged a bit even on LN2 but the price is adjusted for that and a reasonable warranty agreed.
Id wouldnt buy a second hand card of some ebay random

Afraid I'm in the same boat - I wouldn't touch a GPU that's been used for mining. Same reason I'd prefer to buy a car that's been driven by someone in their 40's in a suit than one driven by an 18 year old with a baseball cap on backwards, it'll probably be fine but it's just about playing the odds for me and I don't want to end up with one that'll die prematurely.

When you buy a second hand GPU you don't know if it has been used for mining or folding really, you only have the sellers word.

If you had been running an R9 290 at full tilt and close to 100°C in a confined damp garage with little airflow for example (extreme and unlikely example, naturally) would you say that to a prospective buyer?
