Trying to get a quick reply. :)

My friend's laptop has got a few issues with its display. It appears like it does in safe mode and at first i assumed the drivers were corrupted so i have now installed the latest nVidia drivers and restarted...and it remains the same.

I am now swaying towards a graphics card failure. His laptop normally runs quite hot and is around 3 years old.

Is this a characteristic of a dead graphics card? :(

Can you hook his laptop up to a monitor via vga output? and see if you get a picture?

Will try that now on my TV. It didn't work. His laptop has an output HDMI and i tried it with my Panny, no picture was shown.

sounds like he turned the colour depth down

Can you explain? Edit, just tried. It was on low...put it up to high and made no difference.
