I bought a Ps3 40Gb when it came out, which I changed the harddrive to a 500Gb. I used a small screw driver because the screw was small.

Now I want to sell my PS3 at a store. So I changed the HDD back to the original HDD. They looked at the blue screw for the HDD caddy and they said they can't buy it as its been tampered with and because of their warranty?

But I sold it in the end somewhere else. Is anyone OK with their PS3 or did they change the HDD?

Well it depends what you want? did you use 500gb on your old one? I myself use around 100gb (120gb external) of the internal hdd and then 120gb of my 2.5 external.

I don't have the ps3 now but used to have a 500Gb internal HDD. I had a few downloaded games like Blood Siren curse, Warhawk, Fat Princess, Battlefield 1943 and Socom

They are wrong you are allowed to upgrade HD!

I upgraded mine from 40gb to 250gb. I tend to have about 150gb free on it. I've got about 18 games and all of the installable ones installed (can't even remember which install tbh). I've got about 10 demos that I never touch and one or two games I've downloaded. When I bought the HDD, 250gb was £38 and 500gb was about £68 so wasn't worth the extra for 'just in case'. 160gb was about £35 so equally pointless. Most games only install about 1gb anyway. I only had the 40gb in for about 2 days before I upgraded. The only game I had then was Everybody's Golf which in just over 6gb install so I was off in my estimation of what size HDD I would need. Having a 40gb HDD and one game installed taking up 6.Xgb doesn't feel too good. Unless they start to have games that are a 30gb install, I can't really see me needing more. It's unlikely that will happen but now that all PS3s have decent sized HDDs, it's not impossible that someone will release games with installs of that size. It will probably just plod on as it is though.

As for buying new, a site had the 320gb slim priced at £228 the other day, it's now changed to PS3 320gb + move for £265.

Thats crap, Sony have gave us the option to upgrade the HDD and it doesn't affect warranty in the slightest.
They probably didn't want to buy it from you.

On topic, I have an 80gb PS3, filled with HD videos and about 5 installed games, 15 downloaded games, and I still have 36gb left, so space on a 250 will last quite a while.

Yh, warranty is only void if you remove the sticker that says "warranty seal. warranty is void if sticker is damaged or removed"

(which you have to do to 'mess' with the insides...which is how they know you have, or havn't).

They are just being ignorant. You are allowed to upgrade the HD. It even gives you in structions on how to do it in the manual. I am just about to upgrade mine from a 120g to 320g when I get the time.

I will do as you did though and keep the original HD in case I want to sell it on. Which I cant see ever happening as its a great bluray/media player if nothing else.

I think so as most games don't even have an install option something which is grating me as the disc reading can stutter and make noise
