Has Windows 10 Update messed up video playback ?

I have noticed a heck of a problem since I took the latest big update for Windows 10, this issue I am reporting was fine before the update and I cant revert back to older version as I didnt have system restore switched on :(

I am now on Windows 10 Version 1607 (Build 14393.222).

Since I done the major update I notice now I have a serious bug on all browsers when watching catch up Tv such as Itv, Channel 4 and channel 5 players, I cant remember but I think bbc iplayer catchup is fine from my memory.

What happens is you start watching a program, lets just use an example and say Coronation Street on Itv player.

Anyway, so this is what happens, I start watching tv programmes on basically any browser, I use Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Torch, Vivaldi and I can bet that every two minutes or so the tv programmes I am watching will pause/freeze and sometimes the sound/audio will still carry on but the actual video will freeze and then you need to refresh the browser page and hit the resume button and then the video picks up from where it froze up at.

Its very very strange, as it never acted like this before I I took the latest windows 10 update as I said.

This is another thing too, I cant remember if I instantly installed spybot anti beacon right after the windows update or if that was maybe a day or so afterwards, I am not sure, but yes I have spybot anti beacon installed for obvious reasons on windows 10, could that maybe be causing the tv programmes to freeze like I am explaining I wonder

I will wait until you guys direct me in what to do hopefully as I dont want to mess about with this anymore than I have too.

P.s, I can stream programmes from my actual tv box to the PC no problems at all, they are fine, and as I said, I am pretty sure bbc catchup iplayer is also fine too.

Anyone got any ideas please ? would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I'm having the same issue, also the system grinds the stream down if I'm running something else at the same time, say a game.

I'm not really happy right now due to this, these updates updated on me without agreement. I ended up having to change the group policies to get the damn service to turn off properly and not set a limit to my working time in a day.

Why not disable spybot and try again?
Surely that will tell you conclusively?
M.

Well, I have clicked on "Undo" now which I assume will undo all changes made by spybot anti beacon, so I will try it out later tonight when there is something to watch that I can find on catchup.

Yes mate, its a pain in the azz isnt it, so are you getting the exact same problem with catchup tv as I explained then, Yes ?? If so, are you using any other windows 10 anti spy software etc too ??

If your getting the exact same problem as me then I think we could instantly say the windows update has caused this problem, but until you or someone else gets back to me then I am still unsure as you seem to be too, hmm

I'm not using any anti spy software, I don't use catchup services. My encounter since the last set of patches (Anniversary?) have affected Youtube, Twitch, Video playback and browser sessions.

I get un-syncing of Audio to Video, Video slowdown/motion, Video stuttering. It mostly happens when doing two high resource tasks. One being the video/stream and the other running a game since that's my other major resource hog.

Until the update this was not happening.

(if you have not already) try monitoring system with process explorer or task manager to look for spikes in IO or cpu activity that correspond to glitches in the catch-up playback; process explorer real-time/running graphs should show you which process is the culprit
I had had issue with FF auto-saving which interrupted browsing.

(Also, before I abandonned win10, I had seen automatic system restore was off by default - thanks ms)

I had been running 14936 without problems on 3 sytems. 2 days ago 14942 appeared, much slower boot times, video playback scambled, firefox and chrome badly affected, unable to log on to xbox live account. reverted to previous version - 14936 - using recovery option in settings. Didnt take long and all 3 systems back to normal!!

Strangely I'm showing as build 14393.222... Also windows is show no additional updates available. Mike is your number correct as MS's page are showing as 14393 as the latest at the 29th of September. Oh unless your on the insider program?

Yeah so this patch 'sorted' video playback issues, ha what a joke. Some further info: http://www.ghacks.net/2016/09/30/cumulative-windows-10-update-kb3194496-installation-issues/

I might try rolling back, issue being I have no idea how many versions it installed in one go when it did the last set.

I am also having a problem with video playback in youtube. I don't know if its related to this?

I keep having to close and reopen the browser. I also keep getting tab crashes.

Yeah it looks like Microsoft have been ******* around with things again with out testing the results or the have done this on purpose. I've heard people also complaining about issues with Windows Store and Steam being active at the same and trying to use a game in WS while steam is open.

I've deactivated updates with GP's now to put it back to a reasonable state where I CONTROL what my system does.

MS are trying my patience this week.

well, I cant be 100% sure just yet but after undoing ALL changes made spybot anti beacon and then using ccleaner to clean junk and registry files I now seem to have catch up tv video playing just fine as they used too.

As I say though, I cant be 100% sure just yet though as this will take days to monitor as I dont constantly watch catchup tv.

I can add that I didnt have any problems before or after the windows update with youtube playback and all that stuff like others have said, so I really still dont know whats going on.

For now though a big question mark ? hangs over spybot anti beacon, but I may be miles wrong, we shall see as this progresses, no doubt it will go breasts up again, its a cert isnt it, lol

p.s, as I said in first post, my Windows 10 Version 1607 (Build 14393.222). (which is the latest).

I've had the same issue after the anniversary update on my HP laptop, was down to MS replacing the Intel chipset driver which led to the CPU throttling back too much causing choppy video playback and general system sluggishness.

HP tools found the correct driver but Windows keeps replacing it, very frustrating.

What do you do in device manager to find out if this has happened?

Yes, I see what you mean, this is one pure and utter Fu@@@ng Bas@@@d of an issue and all because of Microsoft, I am going mad here, , updated the new INF and MEI and all that stuff and next thing MS is telling me to take the update that uninstalls them, f@rkinnnn idiots, GRRRRrrrrrrr , so then I use the update and back to square one again, the only option being not to have take/accept any windows updates which is not right, this sucks man

I am now running the "donotspy10" app (version 1.2.0.1 - 1607) and even that wont hold it all back, everything has proved useless so far and spybot anti beacon just made things a lot worse freezing my catchup tv viewing all the time, so thats no good.

MS HAVE A LOT TO ANSWER FOR !!!

P.S, check on your motherboard manufacturers website for latest chipset updates etc etc etc, thats what i done as intel's tools dont ever tell the truth either

I just noticed it looking at the performance tab in task manager, even with a heavy task running the cpu speed wouldn't increase properly.

Changing to the high performance power plan also fixed it but updating the driver through the HP utility meant I could use the other power plans again.

I just have to keep doing it as the HP driver gets overwritten.

What you guys need to do is turn off the update service via Group Policy like I did, I now have control of any updates it wants to apply. It cant install any unless I agree like it used to be in Windows 7.

Do a Google for turning off automatic updates via group policy and you will see, I now need to figure out how to turn on part selection of available updates.

I noticed last night though there was more patches, I'm going to try them tonight though I'm not hopeful.

windows driverquery command (also a nirsoft tool) will show new drivers installed, albeit after it happened, so can difference this list.
See earlier 'AU updated my gpu driver' thread too - you can block driver update for specific hardware ID's - more precise than going metered or disabling all driver updates, not sure it works without pro and group policy edit though.

You can pick and choose updates with windows update mini tool.
