Hi all,

There are a lot of threads on here asking "should I upgrade my <xxx>", instead of asking for advice (too many different opinions online :) ) I'd love to know if anyone has any thoughts on merely the actual performance difference between - for example - my current Haswell 4670K running at 4.2GHz vs the cream-of-the-crop 7700K. The caveat being that the Kaby Lake part is an OcUK binned chip running at 5GHz.

Use case is predominantly gaming, with titles such as Overwatch being front of mind. At the moment thanks to a 1080Ti I am CPU-limited on this and some other games, so my current thinking is what sort of improvement % would be expected with the shift to a much newer architecture AND a +20% frequency gain?

(obviously this is influencing a buying decision, feel free to weigh in if you do have an opinion there :) )

The main difference is i5 to i7 where some games will see an improvement. No idea what Overwatch needs.

Given you have a Hazwell setup a 4790k overclocked would be my choice. Should find one second hand for reasonable money.

I would not pay OC's premium for those 5Ghz chips. Just daft to be honest.
 
You're looking at maybe 8-9% IPC uplift from Haswell to Kaby Lake, plus the 19% clock boost, so 30% raw performance boost total. Whether you notice that in any given game is another matter - but moving from 4c/4t to 4c/8t will probably improve things more than the per-core boost in most cases. Not sure how you can be in any way limited in Overwatch, especially with a 1080 Ti, unless you're going for 300 FPS at Ultra settings?

You'd get much better bang for buck by going for a second hand i7-4770K or i7-4790K and overclocking to 4.5+ GHz.
 
Buy an i7 to drop in your current board and overclock. Sell your i5 chip. It's the most cost effective and also the easiest solution.

running my 5930K difference from 3.7ghz to 4.2 Ghz was 0fps running a 1080ti @ 3440x1440 on overwatch
 
This is the same 'should I upgrade...' post as the others, so I'll give the same answer. No, it's not currently worth it. Overwatch, really? What you have is already overkill for that game. Leave it for another year or so, then go for more cores.

Absolutely nothing worth noting especially in overwatch. If you want to spend money for overwatch get a 144hz monitor, this improved my game play more than anything else I could have done.
 
Interesting - I'm already pretty well covered for monitors (see sig) but am looking for absolute max fps just for the fun of it. Then again, Wildlands when the benchmark isn't crashing seems to only reach 40-50fps @ 1440p wide.

The second hand 1150 i7 isn't a bad shout - my 4670k is a terrible overclocker, had to give it over 1.3V to get it to 4.15Ghz stable :/

Yeah, that's unfortunate. My 4770k hits 4.5 at 1.2 vcore, even without deliding it has room for more.

I'll let you know how the performance is once i build my new 7700k system . I'm going from 4770k 4.2 so will be interesting to see. I also upgraded for the m2 support and faster ram speed, better mb, case and cooler so wasn't just about the CPU but should be interesting to see the performance improvement
 
Not massively scientific but this is the comparison I got when swapping from my 4770K to a 7700K

Interesting - and subjectively overall performance on desktop & in games? Worth the upgrade cost?

The upgrade after selling off old parts cost me around £200 so I'm quite happy with it. The motherboard/CPU were purchased 2nd hand from the members market.
As to performance, general desktop work doesn't seem much different, gaming I feel is a little smoother but that could be the placebo effect of knowing you have new hardware.
