I've just picked up a 4770k and a gigabyte ud4h with 8gb corsair vengeance ram but I'm having problems with applying an OC.

I've reused my Dark Rock Pro 2 cooler and temps seem fine, but the machine BSODs really easily. Being a bit of a noob, I applied one of the auto OC profiles which was 1.35v at 4.3ghz. This seemed too high voltage-wise and certainly ran hot.

So, I went into the bios and started dropping the voltage to find a stable OC, and I can't find one ! So after a bit of googling I found this guide,

I spent most of the afternoon changing settings I'm not familiar with per the guide. Left HT and turbo on, but increased CPU ring and LLC - no luck. It's also hard to tell if the bios is holding the settings. The bios has little buttons next each slider but when I save and exit, CPUz doesn't show if they've worked.

In any case all of the settings BSOD within a few minutes of Prime95.

I reset the board to defaults with all settings at auto and the chip idles at 1.01v and boosts to 1.269 at 3.9ghz. This seems high ? Have I got a dud chip ?
My only success was 4.4ghz at 1.354v. Too high ? Temps were topping at 82c with that voltage.

Any help much appreciated.
 
To be honest, that's the best guide about, the one I used too.

The only settings you really need to change is the v-ring put this at 1.15v, core voltage, start around about 1.25v and see what it will do at that voltage, set your ram to XMP but also manually set the voltage for your RAM to 1.65v, I set K OC to enable, turbo boost to auto, but also set the 4 multipliers in there to the same as whatever you've set your main multiplier too, set number of cores to 4 and set HT to enable, set LLC to turbo or extreme.

You will notice next to some of the sliders there is a little on/off switch, after setting your voltages, set this switch to on then click apply down the bottom for it to take effect, voltages first before changing the multipliers etc, if you change the multipliers first and then click apply, ive found the bios just locks up as it doesn't have enough voltage to sustain the multiplier you set.

These chips are very hot little buggers as soon as you start bumping up the core voltage, I picked up a new one a few days ago to see what I could get out of it, got it very cheap and thought it would be a good one as its a costa rica, it needs 1.39v to do 4.5ghz, I de-lided it due to the blazing temps.

Bit of a comedown from my IB i5 which clocked like crazy.

What sort of temps should I be looking at ?
 
I wouldn't allow it to go above 85oC on any core looking at realtemp or coretemp, apparently though they are safe upto 105oC

I forgot a couple, you also need to set CPU VRIN External Override, recommended is 1.8-2.0v so I met halfway and set mine to 1.9v and also set uncore ratio to x35 for now.

you should only have 1 setting for uncore ratio, dont confuse this with turbo ratio, those 4 you want set to the same as you set your multiplier.

setting uncore to 35 for now will put the uncore in the cpu at stock speed and stop it from being the reason your OC is failing, once you get the cores stable then you can start working on overclocking the uncore.
 
Set up all of the settings per your advice and the best I can get is 4.2 at 1.25v.
4.3 and 4.4 will boot to windows but are an insta-BSOD under prime95, even if I boost voltage to 1.26.

On the plus side the highest temp was 76c.

What else can I do ?
 
Uncore 39 is the way to go.

Also PLL filter can be set to auto.

4.4 is not that bad for some of the recent batches of chips.

Stick with 4.3 and continue to bump up the vcore until your stable, I wouldnt recommend you going past 1.3v though due to temps, if you can get it stable at 4.3 then you'll want your uncore at x40, 300mhz within your CPU speed, however first thing to do after you get 4.3 is try for 4.4.

With my new chip I found I needed approx 0.05v bump up on the vcore per step on the multiplier.

1.30v vcore for 4.3ghz
1.35v vcore for 4.4ghz
1.40v vocre for 4.5ghz etc

Ok 4.3 is holding at 1.270 and 73c.
Worth going for 4.4 ? If so, is it just more vcore, or do we start upping the Uncore ?
 
Just start with vcore, and try for 4.4, temps look good so far, hard to tell stability with such quick tests though.

the uncore is controlled by the vring voltage setting so vcore etc wont effect that.

Uncore is basically your L3 cache and memory controller.
