Haswell i5-4570 high idle temp

Are the haswell cpu's running at higher idle temps that Sandy/Ivy Bridge?

I've put an i5-4570 in my living room itx gaming build and the cores idle at 42/40/38/37 which seems a bit high.

Under load running prime95, heaven 4 and iplayer all running at the same time, it peaks at 80c.

I've had a couple of 0x124 blue screens when gaming and I think its pointing at the CPU as I've replaced the memory and the video card as part of the testing.

I've replaced the TIM 3 times now doing different applications, smear, pea size drop and the X but nothing brings the temps down.

So I'm thinking it might be a faulty chip under turbo but I can only get it to blue screen under games, not under synthetic load. It can be fine for a day when gaming before it blue screens.

Idle temp around 40C seem normal, if:
a) you case don't have at least a 120mm intake for bringing cool air into the case
b) if your living room is hot and has a high ambient temp, your CPU's idle temp won't be at the low 30 ish side like most people

Its the retail intel cooler that comes with it. As its an ITX build, theres not a huge amount of space in it for an aftermarket cooler.

Its currently idling at 35/36/33/31.

Pic below showing CPU and clearance, theres a side fan blowing over it and also a front mounted fan blowing in. Theres an inch and half clearance between the CPU fan and the PSU. Its exausting through the PSU but I've flipping the PSU over just in case the PSU was overheating (I dont think it is).

Edit, its not a great pic with the cables in the way but the motherboard has a quite a bit of airflow over it with the sidefan.

Thanks, thats reassuring then if thats normal. Living room is around 22 degrees.

So just these random blue screens to sort out. Whenever I've had 0x124 on other systems, it was always down to overclocking. As this is stock with no possibilty of overclocking, do you think I should raise the CPU voltage a tad for when it turbos?

Hmm, just looked over at it and theres another blue screen. This time its 0x000000F4.

Starting to wonder if it may be this old SSD that I used or that I've actually got 2 problems! Its a Kingston SSD Now V2/64GB. It was a pull from a works machine that failed.

f4 is a hdd related error

oh and 124 error is most likely not enough cpu v,can also be not enough vccio esp if 16gb,less so if 8gb of memory

124 bsod can be down to incorrect power saving features, such as c1e, EIST, c3/c6 and can be form using offset voltage as apposed to manual.

I would recommend reinstalling the operating system, then reset the bios to optimized defaults then go from there and see if it still gets bsod.

It's fine but thanks for your concern. Load voltage is only 1.1v with the offset.

Interestingly the idle temps have since dropped to the mid 30's
