Hi,

I want to "upgrade" from my Toyota Yaris 06 reg 1.0L petrol to a nice 3 door hatchback, but am unsure on what to get. Looking for something that is relatively easy to drive, and is fuel efficient for short commutes of about 2 miles at a time.

Looking at spending around £8000. Any help would be great.

Cheers.

I don't think that spending 8 grand on something that pootles around town is a great way to spend the money, although it's yours and you could do what you like a 3-4k car would do the same thing and leave the extra for something bigger if needed later or a holiday.

I know Fox wants to say this: Does it really have to be a hatchback?

If you have a genuine need for smallness or smallness and a good load-space then I'll shut up.

If you don't need one of those circumstances, and you buy second hand, you'll usually be better off with a saloon, I mean a "sedan". The same money will get you a better spec.

Large cars are no harder to drive, they are often easier as hatchbacks used to lack things like PAS, and switching to a saloon might free up budget to look at higher spec cars including parking sensors and such things.

If you're buying new, you're looking at a pathetic hatchback when you could get a very nice hatchback or even better car which isn't a hatchback.

To be honest I don't have an issue with the hatchback thing.

More why fuel economy on a 2 mile trip is so important.

Infact it sounds like an 06 Yaris is perfectly suited?

Hmm, I don't think this is entirely a case of £8000 burning a hole in the OPs pocket. He said he "wants to upgrade". Is the Yaris Boring you?

On 2 mile journeys the fuel economy is going to be in the toilet no matter what you drive. That quite simply is not nearly enough time for the engine to warm up.

As stated nothing is really going to be fuel efficent for that journey length, apart from may be a bicycle. However I notice that you are 17 according to your profile. Have you really got bored of your car that quickly?

The Yaris belongs to my brother, which maybe wasn't clear but that's why upgrade was in inverted commas.

The reason it wasn't clear is because you didn't say it

As said above, even the most frugal car will struggle to return impressive fuel figures over only 2 miles so you can probably forget that as an outcome. What kind of cars have you considered?

If I was 17 and only needed to drive 2 miles I certainly wouldnt waste £8000 on a car. £8000 is a massive amount of money for a 17 year old and none of the cars you can actually insure are any good.

So keep the money for a few years, buy a £1000-£2000 hatchback and then buy something nice when you can insure something decent.

Buy a bloomin bike for a 2 mile commute.

If you absolutely MUST have a car, spend £1000 on one and don't be so stupid.
