Having upgraded my computer I also upgraded office (probably from office 2003/2004).

I am hating it at the moment - particularly word!

everything has changed, i presume there is a good reason behind, but i am yet to see it.

For example where has the edit column gone? I cant work out how to do simple tasks like copy and paste without using the keyboard shortcuts.

lets say for example i would like to select my entire document and then copy/paste resize etc

previously I could click right mouse button on the document and I would see the option to select all.

alternatively I could click on the edit header on the toolbar and i would see the option to select all, along with other editing options like undo/redo etc

To do the same thing with word 2007 seem much more complicated.

I have to go to the editing header on the right of my screen, select "select", then select "select all"

It seems much less direct than just using right mouse click.

Is there any way i can roll back the clock and make my word behave more like an older edition?

The new office 'ribbon' is great once you're used to it. The advantage is that everything is laid out in sensible places and it highlights relevant options etc. The disadvantage is it can be a couple more clicks (or scrolls, that works too!) to get to the option you want if you're an experienced user who needs more complex functions. What I've done is assign keyboard shortcuts to my keyboards G-buttons (logitech G11), which lets me do advanced things with complex shortcuts in just one press. You could try and do something like that, but as far as I know, you can't revert to the old configuration.

Select All shortcut - Ctrl + A
Copy shortcut - Ctrl + C
Cut shortcut - Ctrl + X
Paste shortcut - Ctrl + V
Undo shortcut - Ctrl + Z
Redo shortcut - Ctrl + Y

I quite like the new ribbon layout in 2007 and the 2010 Beta. Each to their own, I suppose.

thanks i know the keyboard shortcuts, i always preferred using the mouse though.

Can aynoe explain why they got rid of the edit header, and in particular why they messed with the right mouse button functions?

is there any way i can change the right mouse button function for 2007?

Bad luck mate. The Ribbon UI is the future of Microsoft Office. And it's an excellent UI IMO.

Excuse me if I'm a little blunt, but If you cant even figure out how to do "simple tasks" in Office 2007 just stick with Office 2003.

The best bit about the ribbon is that it's incredibly flexible. If you are an advanced user who uses some of the complex functions in word frequently, make your own ribbon that has exactly the items you need on in the order that makes most sense to your workflow. Once you take 5 minutes to look into it, the ribbon will speed up your use of office massively.

Search for UBitMenu. Gives the option of the old style menu.

where? is there a single button for it? or do i need to go to the editing header on the right of my screen, select "select", then select "select all"

i cant see how that is nicer to use.

You are moaning at 2 mouse clicks, when you know the keyboard shortcut

Add it to the Quick access toolbar, or create a Ribbon group and add it into there.

Simple. :)

Easy,

1. Right click in a blank bit of the ribbon bar and select Customize the Ribbon

2. on the right pane, highlight the Home section and click the new group button, give it a name,
3. you can move it up if you like.
4. Highlight newly created group, on the left, select All Commands in the drop down, then find Select all, press Add>> and off you go, add what you like..

I think you can only edit your own groups/tabs, not the ones made by MS..

keyboard shortcuts are way quicker than the mouse anyway, just use them.

hold your left hand on..

Left Shift, W, A, D, Spacebar. You can type invincibly fast with your hands if that's your starting point

Gotta say Ive been using 2007 for 2 years now and I still hate the sodding ribbon..

Thx for that Ubit menu suggestion Carter, I'll be checking that out shortly..!

The Ribbon is brilliant, in my opinion. I know some people find it counter-intuitive, but I think it is fantastic - no more diving around menus/context menus, just select the section you want and the feature is there. If you want the 'old school look' there are numerous add-ons available, such as the toolbar mentioned above. In addition to that there is a little button at the bottom of each 'section' within the ribbon which opens the dialog box - i.e. font, paragraph, styles and editing all have dialog box buttons - one click and you're there.

Keyboard shortcuts are far superior, however.

I actually like the Ribbon and have it customised to my tastes!!...

Ribbons are the way of the future!.. AutoCAD is the same!.. I'm about the only one here at my work who's stuck with it (since AutoCAD 2009) and not gone to the 'Classic' menu's.. Its a progression!.. I've used Command Line, Tablet, Menu's, Icons and now Ribbons!..

Easy to Customise to how you want em!!.. look neater and use less screen teratory!.. :)

I've actually kept my ribbon standard, I find that works for me. The only thing I do customise, however, is the quick functions at the top.
