Hauppage HD PVR

I am thinking on buying a Hauppage hd PVR to record my Xbox footage on it. It is required that I plug it into a computer. But I do not have one in my room. So I was thinking if I could plug my hard drive into a sata to USB wire. I would then plug the USB cable into a USB to AC adapter. Would this work or does it need to be in a computer to work.
