hi looking into building a new computer and im fine with chosing the products till it comes to the os.

going to be going with vista for the directx 10 and some of the cool features and im going need 64 bit because i will have 4Gb of ram, maybe more later on.

But....
retail or oem?
which vista? (not basic, either home premium or ultimate) and why?
Where can i buy a copy cheap?

Thanks, luke :D

Ok, if you plan to use it now, get a retail Home Premium, then you have a nice (optional) free upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out. Alternatively, preorder windows 7 Home Premium for £50 if you can still find it for that price and live with XP until then.

When it comes to ultimate, if you dont know that you need it, you most likely dont need it. Most of the features that come from Enterprise and Business editions are features that most users won't even know exist, let alone use. It's just not worth it unless you know you need it.

EDIT: didnt explain retail. You just get more freedom with a retail version..But if you're only going to use it on one computer for the life of vista, then fair enough, stick to OEM and save a few quid

when you buy vista now you get an upgrade voucher for windows 7. not sure if its free or there will be a fee involved

Edit: answered above :D

ok thanks guys, i didnt think i needed ultimate and im not sure about the whole windows 7 thing i will have to look into it and see whats different and better. would i be able to use the windows 7 upgrade voucher on my xp pc now? and use the vista premium disk for my new computer?

no one answered my last question, where can i buy a cheap copy of microsoft windows vista home premium 64 bit retail from?

£90 is the cheapest I've seen it, but can't tell you where for obvious reasons.

I really would recommend that you consider just pre-ordering Windows 7 now (for £45) and either use XP if you've got a copy available to you, or use the Windows 7 RC until October when 7 is released. Otherwise you're essentially paying double the price just for the sake of using Vista for 3 months, which doesn't really seem worth it.
