From my sig to this for little to no cost :

OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Reaper HPC Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPR10664GK)
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail
Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Asus Xonar D2X 7.1 PCI-Express Sound Card - Retail

But do I bother or just make myself some money instead as that's the other option? Cash is always an issue but if this is an opportunity to keep my rig upto date then i'll go for it..

So basically I guess i'd like to know if you think it's worth it or not...

Thx

Running Vista64 btw

Well, if little to no money means something like £50 then yes.

It is a bit of a pity the CPU isn't a 4 core one, but still will be a nice upgrade, if only because of the 4GB of ram :)

Can upgrade to any spec i like it's just after having a browse I came up with that spec.....? Any changes and opinions are more than welcome

not really worth it to upgrade. IMO. You have a E6600 @3.6Ghz, why get a wolfdale (from what I read they don't OC that well) be surprised if you get much more than what you have right now.

Just get 4Gb of RAM and wait for next Intel Nehalem - probably the next big upgrade point (if the apps follow :)) Intel may also come out with GPU - could be interseting to see what happens in the tech rat race => I'll get a InfiniCore and a DecaSLI with ITB of RAM and a 100" screen and play Pac Man ;)

being as you're running vista the 4gb might be a good idea, wouldn't bother with the cpu or mobo compared with you're current one running as it is.

Even if it costs next to nothing? Thought the wolfdales clocked quite well from what i've read? Upto 4gig? Also have more cache?

keep the cash, the difference is not that big IMO.

It really depends on how much money you will save by not doing it... and how important they are. The biggest difference is the extra RAM

Well I can sell my current components to somebody I know for £500 and use this cash to replace the parts.. Or just buy him new items and build him one from them.. I've explained to him the situation and as long as he gets a good system for £500 he's not fussed.. Also i'd be the one fixing it if anything does go wrong with the 2nd hand parts so if the worst comes to the worst i'll have to get a new component to replace any failures for the first 6 months say....

Hope that makes sense....

how much cash will you get?
If it is less than £200, get this stuff, which you could at least sell.

Cash would be a lot less than £200 if I buy new as i'd only be charging to build him one say... which isn't v hard and can't charge too much..

My way we both benefit but was wondering if it would be an extra risk and an extra effort for nothing....

As I said, if you can get a quad setup for very cheap with 4GB of ram then go for it.

Up to you at the end of the day.

What's the deal with quad anyhows? Thought it was only a benefit for rendering etc at the moment? Was looking for the best clock for clock cpu really as i only use it for the internet ;)

so just to clarify you are skimming on a build and the option is sell your current pc for cash or upgrade your pc and sell the old one on and breakeven on a new rig.

i would just keep it simple and give the man what he wants and take the cash, giving him second hand parts and making him pay over the odds is asking for trouble.

i think quad cores are starting to become standard for those building a high end or even mid range pc for gaming. i think its tempting seeing as its more future proof. but if i was you . i wouldnt bother upgrading yet and if you do , just get the ram.

Second that... In the long run, simple is better

Seeing as i haven't been bothering to OC the E6600 recently would it still not be cosidered a good upgrade if I ran them at stock?

400x9... you got very nice chip there.
I wouldn't upgrade it, you won't see that much of an increase.
Your rig is still more than up to date.
Just get another 2gig of ram and thats it, will last you untill nehalem without probs.

And quad just for gaming is a waste. There is no future-proofing anymore either, you will buy your future proofing Q6600 and in max one year there will come new CPUs, mobos, GPUs and memory, apps will be designed for them and your future proof Q6600 will be old already and won't be able to keep up.
