Have any of you ever done 'dental tourism' abroad?

I'm looking to get some dental work done soon which won't be covered by the NHS, which will mean that it's probably going to cost an arm and a leg (I have an issue with wisdom teeth growing in at a weird angle leading to some of my top row of teeth becoming crooked -- so that means braces).

I've read some things online about 'dental tourism' -- basically Brits going abroad (sometimes after a consultation in the UK) to Hungary or Poland to get dental work done to a similar standard for less than half the cost. For example:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/8785615/Overseas-dentists-fill-a-gap.html

So have any of you guys/gals ever done this? What was the experience like? Would you recommend any companies/surgeries in particular?

I don't know about dental work but I know there's a few people on the forum who went to Poland for gyno surgery and they said the service they received was great and about half the cost of what a not so successful procedure over here would cost.

When I had braces they required quite a few repeat visits for adjustments etc.

Are you not going to need many follow up appointments? Or are you going to have half your teeth ripped out and replaced with diamonds?

Mother in Law went to India to get all teeth removed and all implants put in.

Just going back now for a checkup.

Was about 1/3rd of the cost of UK so the 3 week 'holiday' was free.

I've read this a few times now and can't piece together the gag.

Hold on.... Are we talking about prostitutes?

I've just had to google that. Men pay to have their moobs removed? What a world.

I'd assumed you were talking Gynaecology. Which is a different thing :D

my chest bones stick out and either make me look like I have big muscles or man boobs depending on my weight :(

I'm in a similar situation too. Need to get some work done (dental implants since knocking out some of my teeth when I was a kid) that's not usually covered by the NHS, and would have to turn to private dentist to get the job done. However it'll likely cost thousands, and needed an alternative. I talked to my dentist about it and he's actually got in contact with Guy's Hospital and referred me there to get the work done for free..., but done by students. I think I obviously have the right to feel a lil' weary, but I have faith :p Sorry to band-wagon thread, but anyone done this too?

To answer OP from what I've heard it's not that bad of a process, actually pretty good most of the time. But as someone else suggested, braces need re-ajusting/tightening/general check-up every few months maybe, I'm assuming you know you can get the done back 'ere in the UK?

It wasn't me but traveled at the same time with a couple to Budapest he was in the same situation.

It was cheaper for them to go to Budapest for 4 days staying in the Corinthia hotel (nice hotel) and pay for the dental work than it was to get it done on the NHS.

The surgery sent a private Mercedes to pick them up from the airport and were dropped off at the airport.

If i ever need something like this doing I will do exactly the same, He said the service was top notch and they all spoke brilliant English and he got a city break in a lovely place

Not had anything major done but I've had my teeth checked cleaned / polished in Poland for the last 5 years. Always found the level of care and service to be as good as the UK, at half of the price.

Know a few people who go to Spain to get dental work done. Go over, have a weeks holiday, get whatever they need doing and still works out much cheaper than over here and get a weeks holiday from it.

When I lived in Brussels, a friend I made there is a cosmetic surgeon. He told me that a lot of women from the UK used to go to Brussels for boob implants as it was cheaper than the UK even when accounting for cost of a hotel and Eurostar ticket.
If anything I would say the healthcare in Brussels was well above and beyond what the NHS provides in the UK.... I miss Brussels for that. I used to be able to call my doctor at any time of the day and usually get an appointment the next day or sometimes even the same day. So why it’s more expensive than the UK for anything health related is beyond me.

My wife and I had our teeth done in Poland last year.

Mine would have cost about £1500 privately in the UK, was not just 1/2 the price... it was 1/10th!!! About £150... and that wasn't from the cheapest we could find, it was a well-respected private-quality dentist that her family had been using for years.

My wifes would have been more than that and hers ended up costing about £200.

Mum has gone for implants to Poland for the price difference, she's originally from Poland though and knows the language, and even better, niece works as a dentists assistant, so she was pretty sure to get a reliable dentist.

Like with all ''professionals'', you have to keep an eye out for them trying to screw you over for money.
