I've been reading great reviews about the new ATI cards but i'm undecided as ATI have always been terrible for opengl support compared to Nvidia. Have recent cards/drivers fixed this or do they still focus almost exclusively on Directx performance?

It's still nowhere near as good as NVidia's support but they improved performance a lot for games sometime around the Doom 3 era, they are still far more prone to compatiblity issues in newly released game though usually requiring a hotfix.

With the release of the 2900 series, ATi pulled their entire OpenGL driver apart and rebuilt it, focusing on improving performance.

I think it's just as good as nVidia's now, if not better.

Judging by the enemy territory benches i.e. 4870 beating the GTX260...yeh ATIs all good on the opengl front.

Not in many 3D rendering programs which cad users use however :( Hardware rendering on any ATi card doesnt work so hot!

their gaming Open GL performance is however great so thats fine ;P

I think if you look at the professional level cards like the FireGL then with those professional situations Ati and NV are neck and neck.
