I am sorry, but 12" is WAY too long for a video card.
I am sure there must be a way of having the card shorter than this.
If this goes on then we are going to have to have special cases just to fit video cards.

The power consumption is insane as well.

I am definately sticking with Nvidia - at least they know how to make a card powerful without being longer than than a giraffe's neck... (I was thinking something else, but there might be under 16s here :))

As people keep saying, you're looking at the OEM version that companies such as Dell will be fitting into their case, and this thread is obviously nothing but flamebait for ATI fanboys.

That said, I think both companies are taking the Mick at the moment with power consumption and size. They have for quite a while now and I am tired of it, I'm dying for a die-shrink sometime this year.

I know that the retail is shorter.
However even 9.5 " is still ridiculous.
I agree with you mate, it is just getting silly.
We need ther technology to get smaller.
I am tempted to get an 8600 Ultra, just because it is a reasonable size.....

so your gona buy longer Nvidia cards instead.

You're right and it is totally ruinous to case airflow. 12" is madness but the 8800 size is ridiculous as well. Thing is we're going to look back at these in 2-3 years time and have a bit of a laugh much like we do when we look back at the Hercules cards :)

well we may look back at these cards in 2 years time and look on them like we look on the original computers - huge and not very powerful.

Heck in 2-3 years time we may well have much smaller, but much more efficient GPUs....

LOL

That makes no sense - buy nVidia because it is the slightly shorter of 2 very long cards to begin with??

Let's face it, this problem will only effect a very tiny percentage of the PC population at the very top of the chain. Bottom line is, if you want to stay at the cutting edge, then you have to be prepared to shell out to accomodate the latest tech/feature. The cards fit in a server case no problem at all, so there is your solution.

Does it matter if they're long? No just buy a big case in the first place! I don't think I'll have a problem here, in face it could probably be 2" deep and still fit!

If you are using air cooling then yes I believe that there is an issue with having really large components. Those video cards make a big block for any decent airflow from the bottom of the case to the top.

Just out of curiosity why is the retail and oem versions of the ati card different sizes if there the same card?

If it was explained then sry i must have missed it.

oem cards are built to a size to fit oem pc's. the card itself is just <10" long, but the package is the full 12.5". Ati are just using that extra lengh for their heatsink.

no, because oem cards are built to length. at the end of that card is a mounting bracket to secure the card down. take a look at older oem cards, they are exactly the same.

retail cards dont have that bracket, so shorter heatsinks arent needed.

put simple the retail version is going to be 9.5" so its shorter than a 8800gtx. People say ati are talking the mick but personally i think most the people moaning are! yes people whinged abit about the length of 8800gtx's but what people are doing now is just stupid taking things to extremes. Especially when they are shorter than the competitions rivals card!

Yeah i can't believe everyones taking a pop at ATi for having a shorter card than Nvidia, wtf are they on, complaining about the size of it when its shorter than Nvidias cards pmsl. :D :D

Im sorry but if you moaning because R600 is to big, then go and buy the bigger Nv cards, simple. :D

I wish that half of the pc sites didnt post that pick now every one is beliving thats its 12" long
its gona be 9.5" which is smaller than the 8800gtx
if you wanna complain thats its too big complain about the 8800gtx as well
