I have been given an old Dell server that's got a Xeon X3430 chip inside. What is this equivalent too?

Is it worth salvaging to upgrade my brothers old 775 socket system, if I can pick up a LGA 1156 board?

It is similar to an i5 750, but clocked slightly lower, I doubt it will have overclocking capability (though I may be incorrect) and I expect it has a few extra little features which will help with certain kinds of processing when compared to the i5, but not "day to day" stuff.

He has a 2.9GHz Core 2 duo at the moment. I was just wondering what this Xeon chip is comparable to? First generation i5 maybe?

What has your brother got, Q6600?

If so, it's got the same cache, same clockspeed, same core count, a generation newer architecture and a generation smaller dye.

So probably 5-10% faster in synthetic benchmarks, probably not noticable differences in games.

EDIT: Just saw your reply, yea a lower end 1st generation i5 would be correct.

Ah ok, thanks for the info Mustang :)

He only has a dual core, its the wolfdale e6300, so 2.8GHz not 2.9 like I thought.

Many thanks for the info. I might keep my eye out for a new mATX mobo for him and some DDR 3 ram. Unless I can use the DDR3 ECC ram from the server (4x2GB)?

Oh and many thanks for your info earlier Acme, I didn't see it until just now.
