Have I bought the wrong thing (Netgear WG602)

I already have a main pc in my living room connected to a Netgear wireless router (DG 834PN) and this is working fine, I can access the internet and configer the router without a problem

Last night and this morning I built a shuttle 25p for my bedroom and bought a WG602v3 Access point for the shuttle to hopefully connect to my router wirelessly.

I know I could have gone usb but thought the "network" way would be less resource hungry etc etc and also wanted to mount the Access Point a lot higher (for a better signal) than the main shuttle.

Have I bought the wrong thing? Because I have added the mac address of both router and AP in the "allowed devices " of the other one's IE console, made sure they are using the same wireless channel, the network name and access key is all correct but they just refuse to talk to one another.

Any help would be appreciated

(btw as I was fiddling with my router I have just seen my adsl upgrade has been completed to an 8mb d/l and 500k upload speeds :D )

Err all you needed was a wireless network card. You will have to make the access point and router talk to each either, in some kind of bridged access point mode.

If you can set the Wireless on your router to bridge mode then it could be ok. A quick glance at the spec of the AP says that it supports it, but its not clear at a quick glance whether the Router does.

In general though an Access Point is meant to work the other way - plug into the central wired only router/switch etc to enable wireless clients to connect.

Yeah, you need to talk the AP into working as a client of the router.
If you get it working, it should be better than with a wireless card though (reduced load, no drivers needed etc).

This is what I was hoping to do - I guessed wrongly that AP's were meant to work like this.

Problem with this is that there are no pci slots in the 25P and I wanted the height associated with a seperate unit rahter than tucked behind the main body of the pc.

Thank you for the bridging idea I will look into that

thank you - unfortunately I dont think my router works in bridge mode so I am completely out of luck

Well try the AP in bridge mode anyway, depends on exactly what Netgear are calling bridging, it may connect as a client even without special settings on the router.

If there is anywhere in the AP configuration pages that says AP Client mode that would be ideal!

EDIT: Just had a nose round the Netgear site and its not looking hopeful :(

Just got back from the pub and I think you are right - I will try again tomorrow.

one other slight possibility is if i use ICS (i think its internet connection sharing anyway lol) on my main pc which has a wireless card and try and add the wireless card's mac address to the AP and do it that way - unfortunately of course that means my main pc has to remain on at all times which isnt ideal - ohhh well will try both ideas when I have a proper head on tomorrow evening after work

thank you again
