Have I done something or forgot something

so I’m finally back up north and just installed my i7 processor, however when I turn it on the fans start on both the cpu and psu for about 1 second and then off and it just does the same going till I unplug.

Never usually have issues installing processors, but I ether haven’t done something or something is wrong, anyone care to shed some light on this please, normally I can resolve these issues but I’m at a loss with this one.

If this link works as I never upload to YouTube via mobile devices.

Can’t inagine it being my psu as that was fine, only thing I didn’t do was anything to do with bios, but this doesn’t seem like a bios issue to me?

All power connections plugged in - including the 4 or 8 pin for cpu power.
Memory in the correct slots (some boards can be fussy)
Try a trusty CMOS reset.

(not sure if this a new build)

What components you have?

Try booting with minimum parts: One DIMM, and no drives connected.

Also if you just built it did you make sure there aren't too many motherboard stand offs and that they're in right positions?

Is this the i7-860 you mentioned before you got to replace the i3-540? Where did you get it?

I know a certain store by the name of C-E-X sells 2nd hand processors but does not test them, and rakes of them are DOA.

So if you got it from there, it could just be a bad CPU.

Otherwise, maybe you damaged the pins on the socket removing the old CPU/installing the new?

If the PC was working fine until the upgrade, not sure what else it's likely to be.

Can you give some more details about the upgrade? Are you 100% sure things are all compatible such as cpu/motherboard/memory? If it's the system in your signature then I don't know much about that generation of hardware off the top of my head, but something tells me there were situations where there wasn't complete compatibility across a socket/chipset.

Thanks for replies.

Quick update I’ve just connected my supernova and does the exact same thing, so I can rule out psu.

Back to the questions.

1. It’s an old build, it’s what I have in my sig, so that tells you the exact stuff I am working with.

2. the i7 is the exact 860 I mentioned I purchased last week and yeah it is from said shop too lol, don’t usually buy processors from them, but I’m wary of what they can and can’t test, don’t usually have much issues.

3. All the pins looked fine and had no issue placing it in the socket, I don’t spread the paste over like you used to have to, I put a certain amount in the middle and never had issues.

4. I tried without my gt610 and same issue, I reseated the ram, reconnected the main power bits, don’t have any hard drive or optical connected.

5. Whenever I am looking to build j always make sure it will be compatible, the support list for this motherboard supports the i7 and with the same bios as what the i3 I just took out uses, so that shouldn’t be an issue, it’s my first dealing with an i7.

had to secure the cooler on with 3 pins this time, but its secure, however same old thing, so at the moment i am trying the cmos resetting, would i be right in saying that if that doesnt do the trick then i purchased a dead processor?

there is only one header, everything is connected as it should be and quick update, the cmos reset didnt work, so should i cut my losses and try return it or still something to try?

I would say unless you're overlooking something glaringly obvious like a cable not connected right, chances are it's just a dead CPU.

As I said, C-E-X are atrocious for this. I was in there one day and a guy was taking in RAM off someone, the 'test' was literally him sniffing it to make sure it didn't smell burnt. No further testing, then it's out on sale to the public.

It's a shocking model. The only components they test properly are graphics cards.

ha yeah i know what you mean, but ive not had too many issues with them, if they sell me server ram by mistake i just return it, but i have never paid high enough to worry about faulty ram and the last processors i had from them was a pentium dual core E range, c2d and a q6600 and all worked spot on, so well those systems i had sold without issues coming back to me, they not all bad with the tech, i but a lot from them, my issue really is returns go to voucher most the time and while they sell certain age of items, they wont buy them off you to begin with, i swear some bits come from the staff.

anyways i will go over everything before i put my i3 back in.

whats more annoying is for what ive paid for this and the case im waiting on, ive just noticed i missed out on a m-atx build with i5 2400, 6gb, 560ti, ssd, tx750 system for same cost amount(£60), basically the near ideal build i wanted before going itx all because i got happy over my first i7  lol

F5 would be considered higher than F2 wouldnt it in bios? if so then it certainly isnt a bios thing, just put my i3 back and in the bios it says im on version F5, minus sata related, i have connected everything the way it was, just the way i did it when i first fitted the i7, so certainly no issues there either, trouble is i dont have access to another 1156 board to make sure its the actual processor and not just disliking my itx board.

this is the support list https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-H55N-USB3-rev-10#support-cpu
