Have I done this right?

Hi folks, my cousin is looking for a desktop pc after years of being with a laptop. His criteria isn't anything out of the ordinary really, he wants longevity and decent value for money. This rig is going to be used for gaming and whilst he doesn't play the latest and greatest I've spec'd up with the eye of notching up the graphics card in the future to give him great boosts in performance when he feels he needs it.

Anyway here is a provisional list, have I missed anything glaringly obvious or are there areas where I can do better?

I haven't included a gfx card just yet as this is up for debate. His budget is up to £800-£1000 but if he doesn't play AAA titles much (I think the most spec intensive game he has eyed up is probably TW: Warhammer) then I don't see why we wouldn't stick closer to the lower end of his budget.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £710.86
(includes shipping: £0.00)

Wait until new releases and/or black friday.

Personally I would get the largest SSD on offer around then and drop the HDD.

Would also get a either a higher res monitor, or at least a 144hz one, it depends on his tastes. One that is freesync and match it with an AMD card. Again, either one of the new ones or a reduced price current one come black friday. I wouldn't just use intergrated to start with. It is only going to disapoint until a real one shows up.

I dunno if there will be such epic black fridayness as last year, but who knows, its very close.

The Psu is likely larger then you will need too, you will deffo get away with a smaller one. Forget multi gpus in the future if he is on a budget.

Thanks for the input Threepwood (love the name btw!)

Going only SSD would be great but I guess the choice here is having 250gb of pure SSD storage or the option I've already looked at, I guess this will be down to him to decide. On a side note, he could just wipe his 2.5" notebook drive and slap it in the new computer.

PSU was something I thought about, my only thought about going such a large one was if not for SLI/Crossifre but incase he upgrades in future to an older card like a 980ti, could perhaps a 500w still handle this?

Monitor, not sure his budget really lets him get anything fancy and in honesty I have no idea about new monitors so am all up for advice here!

I doubt he will wait until black friday deals even though that would be tempting, his laptop's days are numbered!

You dont need the paste as the cooler comes with some, the SSD is pants, try Samsung or Crucial or HyperX.

550W will be more than enough for all single gpu solutions.

Going back to your OP, Total War: Warhammer is quite intensive on both CPU and GPU, a 1060 should be OK. My 1080 @ 2560x1080 struggles on Ultra.

Just for expectation if that's the main game he will be playing.

Without trying to start a debate, I would be keen to stick with an Nvidia card but I will pass on the info.

There are a few items out of stock at the moment, namely the CPU/mobo bundle, the PSU and graphics card. Can someone recommend any alternatives but keeping the total cost the same? The motherboard for me is a bit of a minefield, I don't need bells and whistles, as long as it's fit for the job and will allow for a bit of light overclocking in the future then I've got no problems there.

Edit: @ThaReaperGuy thanks for the reply bud, I reckon it will be the most demanding game he will play certainly at the moment so that's great news :)
