Have i just ballsed up my cpu and mobo?

I put way too much compound on the cpu and cooler, when i went to turn on pc, it had a light on saying there was a problem with the cpu, so i take it apart to discover the compound has run over the sides. While taking it off i also got compound under the cpu. (i5 proc)

So i now have a cpu covered in compound, with small bits of compound in the mobo cpu slot.

Anyone any advice on what i should do to clean it off / is it even possible to recover from this?

I'll try post pics to at least amuse you guys! Wee man just waking from slumber so it may take me a few hours to get round to this.

Any help appreciated.

you could try getting a needle and scrapping it out the socket.

Not sure what to do with the pins without risking damage.
 
Was it Artic silver or a similar conductive paste?
Either way, your gonna need to carefully clean up as much as you can... Cotton buds, tissue paper and patience. You can get TIM remover liquid, think akasa do one... Use on the buds/tissue paper, also helpful to soften up any bits that are proving stubborn.

When you reapply, follow the instructions if it has any, dont need much (artic silver its half a grain of rice - grain of rice sized piece.

Oh man that is bad. I feel your pain dude.

The CPU looks worse of to me. Get that socket cleaned up first. You want that working as its all over.

Man the pics make me cringe. " Size of a pea " on the CPU in future.
 
I think you have ballsed it up. There's no reason why any manufacturer would give you a replacement, because you screwed it up.

What that means, though, is there's no reason not to try and fix it yourself. Get some Antec thermal ****e remover, some surface purifier, and some cotton buds, and have a go!

I think the CPU may live if you totally clean it with Isopropyl alcohol or similar (carefully!), the mobo socket doesn't look flooded with it, if you can clean it out it might be worth a go. If they don't work after that you could probably recoup some costs by selling it on to someone who might be able to fix it (or thinks they can).
 
"You need an artic silver cleaning kit, and a paper towel.

Take a paper towel and fold it until it fits perfectly in between the cpu pins. While the paper towel is inserted between the pins (in the place you intend to clean) gently drop 2 tabs of artic silver thermal material remover near the pins and paper towel and let it soaks the towel, so the liquid contacts the pins or dirty areas. then gently move the wet towel slowly back and forth between the pins to clean the thermal paste off

Repeat the same way with artic silver surface purifier and it gets the job done. All liquids are safe for the cpu pins.

I find that the super absorbant paper towels work best.

I was in this situation myself.

CPU looks cleanable (paste looks on pads only)

Dont envy you cleaning the mobo socket.

bob055's suggestion looks the way to go.

it would be more effective to get a mallet and hit the socket multiple times than use cotton buds

have you ever put a cloth in a cpu socket?

judging by your quote i would go as far as to say "no, no you havent" as pins get attracted to cloths

my advice:

thermal paste remover in the socket

tip it so the remnants run out of the socket

put it in the airing cupboard for a few days

- and be more careful
 
I think RJ is right, you are going to need to actually 'wash' this stuff with TIM remover and then allow it to 'very thoroughly' dry before attempting to power on.

It might work, it might not ...only one way to find out though and dare I say, you don't have much to lose except a couple on pounds of some TIM remover.

I've seen some over-zelous application of thermal compound in my time, but nothing like this, did you sneeze when you were applying it or something ?
