Have I just destroyed my CPU?

Just lapped my E6600. Used a dab of baby oil on the sand paper. Came out quite well, and I had placed the black protector thing that comes with the CPU on the back while I did it. However, I have just removed this and found a bit of oil has crept in round the edges. It's not swimming in it, but you can see in the light the edges around the gold pins underneath is all shiny. Not to the center, but just about half a cm in. I'm worried now about plugging it in. Have I destroyed it? Don't want to power it all up and something go boom and then everything is ruined! What have I done?! Should I use the ArctiClean solution you use on the CPU itself to try and clean this off, or would that be a recipe for disaster?

Baby oil? lol. I'd strongly recommend the Artic cleaner approach, give it a good few turns with plenty of kitchen towel, and a final burst with something secure that won't leave traces of paper or cloth. Wise choice not to risk it, imo :)

If its just babyoil you should be ok as its non conductive. Wipe as much off as possible then give it a whirl, easy for me to say huh. Seriously though your chances of killing the chip are slim. The only problem you have is oil takes a lot longer to evapourate than water.

You are so lucky you did with an LGA775 chip as they are almost impossible to damage. Wipe it off and stick it in the socket. It'll run. I don't understand this vogue for lapping CPU's though. It just makes them worth far less second hand and in my experience it very rarely improves the heat conduction to the extent that it's worth it.

I got a bit of wet copper miz from the IHS on the back of mine, but just gave it a good old rub with kitched tissue and it came off pretty easy.

And as for not seeing benefits of lapping a CPU - I got 10'c off mine. After lapping it you can put a stupidly thin layer of thermal paste on, and you get a much flatter contact with the HSF. 10'c was well worth lapping imo... but you're right about selling 2nd hand, if you plan to sell up seperate components later on, then you're best off not lapping. Personally I always end up keeping computers so long that by the time I might sell it, it's not worth anything anway - lapped or not.

Certainly worth doing. All powered up now and no problems. Knocked about 10 degrees off my temps, and Orthos is hitting about 40 tops right now, so I'm very happy indeed!! :D Everyone should do this!

Just used a bit of the ArctiClean stuff. Still can see a sign that something was there though, but it all seems to be running just perfectly... for now... ;)

Whats lapping?? Getting my 4300 soon and intrested in doing this if it knocks temps down a lot!
