Have I made a CPU/Mobo assumption error

Basically I grabbed a AM2 9550 Quad to replace my 4000+ X2 thinking "its AM2, that should work fine". Have stuck this in my Asus M2N and the thing turns on, no picture, 4890 fan going like the clappers, not a single beep but I think I can hear the HDD going away.

Suddenly thought "crud! have I got something that isn't compatible?".

Coming on here to see if anyone else can shed some light as this is the first ever replacement I've done.

Oh, I've not updated BIOS for ages so not sure what support there is since mobo launch.

I see this as the last BIOS update mentioning CPU support:

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/BIOS/Asus/Asus-M2N-BIOS-0808.shtml

tells me about 0% as to which new CPUs it is supporting.

Fingers crossed that all I have to do is put the old CPU in, update BIOS and try again.

Have you got the latest BIOS version? If not, bung the old CPU back in and update it, then try again. BIOS updates frequently add compatibility with new CPUs.
