Have I made a mistake buying this CPU?

I've just bought an Athlon XP 2600 serial no. AXDA2600DKV3D as a cheap upgrade for an Athlon XP 1600. It's fitted to an old Asus A7V266 motherboard.
CPU-Z detects the core speed as 1678.8 Multiplyer 12.5 FSB 134.3 Bus speed 268.6. I believe the core speed should be 2083.
I now think that the motherboard doesn't support this CPU properly so what can I do, if anything?

I am afraid not much.

You can buy cheap socket A mobos which support 166 FSB or 200FSB for about £20 brand new.

My old MSI KT333 was fine at 170FSB and beyond but I doubt you can go over 150FSB with your asus.

Are there two types of Athlon XP 2600 because the Mobo should support up to 2600 with the latest bios?

First up I'd start cranking up the FSB as high as you can get it stable. Then maybe look into the possibility of mutliplier unlocking, which requires a hardware mod to cut/bridge the chip IIRC.

Reading your serial number would mean that you have a Model 8 CPU with a FSB of 333MHz.

Maybe you're mobo has jumpers that need to be set for FSB 333.

What mobo are you using?

It's the kids PC which has an old Asus A7V266 motherboard.
I was looking to upgrade it as far as it would go before having to completely overhaul it.
Basically what I want to know is do I try and find a 266FSB chip and try and sell this one or do I stick with it and make do?
If I stick with it how much down on performance is it going to be compared to a 266FSB? I'm a bit lost when it comes to FSB and frequency etc.

whats the rest of the cpu code? it might be unlocked. but if it isnt then you arent going to get much more than 150fsb (300ddr) out of your board, harddrive corruption sets in soon after.

I would guess its running more as a XP2000+ (FSB 266MHz) = 1667MHz at mo.

I would say you might be better selling the 2600 + and getting a 2400+ (The 266fsb 2600+ are gold dust to find tbh) otherwise sell your current motherboard (maybe even with the 1600+ if you still have it and get another board which supports the 2600+. The other issue with this is checking your rams PC2700 (333) aswell ....
 
Right this has just gone from bad to worse. While checking the RAM and jumper settings I've clearly upset something as it won't boot now. I haven't altered or removed anything just turned the case on its side. It powers up all fans are running but no beeps or video output (totally black screen) It's done this in the past and cured itself!!??? I think the PS2 keyboard plug is dodgy.
Anyway I've had enough so; the RAM is 266Mghz PC2100 so it makes my recent Athlon XP 2600 purchase even more questionable. My fault I failed to realize there were two models available.
Anyway can anyone suggest a decent motherboard to replace the Asus with.
Remember this is the kids PC and so I'm trying to keep costs down a bit. It must have AGP 8 as I want to refit the ATi Radeon 9800XT. I'll have to suck the mop and buy more PC3200 RAM.
I take it that cases haven't changed too much so hopefully I can reuse that if I should go for a more modern upgrade. But does anyone do a modern motherboard with AGP 8?
Any advice please.

If it is, is your case Micro-ATX size as well (matx) as that is a matx mobo.
